Indicative of a direct affront to coalition partner Peoples Democratic Party, chief minister Ghulam Nabi Azad today handed over the 'additional' charge of Housing an Urban Development department to Minister of state for Forest and Higher Education Aijaz Ahmed Khan here today.
The decision seems to be an indicator of growing rift among the coalition partners and Azad's bid to woo the Gujjar votes ahead of Assembly elections, which are due next year.
The department of H&UD, which was under the charge PDP mascot of 2002 elections, Qazi Mohammad Afzal, who resigned after chief minister withdrew the charge of Forest department from him. Qazi Afzal tendered his resignation soon after in protest. Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad, in reply to a letter written by Qazi Afzal, refused to accept the resignation but retained the portfolio of Forests with him.

Confusion prevailed all over Jammu region today with the late announcement by the Government about observance of holiday by all government and private educational institutions in connection with the Gandhi Jayanti celebrations across the state today.
While some educational institutions, both government and private, observed the holiday, the majority of the schools, especially the private institutions, functioned as usual, so much so that Government college for Women Parade ground also opened as usual but was closed when authorities came to know that government has announced a holiday for all schools and colleges in the state today.

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad has donated his month's salary towards the rehabilitation of victims of Khundroo army ammunition depot fire, an official spokesman said today.
Azad signed a cheque for Rs 45,000, the amount he gets as salary per month, payable to Jammu and Kashmir relief fund, he said adding the amount will go into the rehabilitation of the Khundroo incident victims.The army ammunition depot at Khundroo went up in flames on August 11 affecting 13 nearby villages.... | |

Two army officers and nine militants were killed in the three-day-long gunbattle in Tangmarg area of Baramulla district which ended today.
The bodies of the militants have been recovered from the site of the encounter at Ringiwalla Khall village in Baramulla district this afternoon, a defence spokesman said.
The encounter broke out on Monday night when troops of 34 Rashtriya Rifles launched a search operation in the village following specific information about presence of militants.

While onions are bringing tears into the eyes of consumers, apples are making growers in Kashmir to weep. The onion prices, which in the retail market in Jammu have crossed Rs 25 kg, have upset the budget of housewives, with J&K being most hit, since the state is solely dependent on imports from other states for its requirement of onions, as the crop is hardly grown in any field in the state.
