An earthquake measuring 4.8 on the Richter scale with its epicentre in Afghanistan rocked Kashmir on Sunday evening, triggering panic among people here but there was no report of any damage to life and property.
''The epicentre of the tremor was in the Hindu Kush region of Afghanistan. It measured 4.8 on the Richter scale,'' Kashmir met department director NP Bhatnagar said.

Prominent Kashmiri Poet and Educationist Mohammad Abdullah Dev Nadeem passed away here last night. He was 77. Survived by six sons and two daughters including Shameem Dev Azad, noted singer, Padmashree Awardee and wife of Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad. Late Mr. Dev was ailing for some time and breathed his last at 1:45 AM at his Hyderpora residence. Mr. Dev was a renowned educationist who has served the state education department and a retired as District Education Officer in 1986.

Two soldiers were killed in yet another incident of `hostile fire' from across the border near the Line of Control, in Sunderbani area of Rajouri district, during the wee hours today.
Though officials were tightlipped over the matter and claimed that the soldiers were killed while foiling an infiltration bid by a group of militants at Dadal post along the Line of Control in Sunderbani, well informed sources said that soldiers fell to the bullets of Pakistan Rangers.
