Pakistan punishes Musharraf
Zardari-Nawaz poised to form government
2/20/2008 12:13:06 AM
Islamabad | Feb 19 Dealing a body blow to the ruling PML-Q loyal to President Pervez Musharraf, Pakistan's opposition PPP and PML-N today emerged as the largest parties in parliamentary polls and may jointly form a government, threatening the eight-year rule of the former General. A day after the Pakistanis voted for a new Parliament, state-run PTV said that Pakistan People's Party (PPP), riding on a sympathy wave following the December 27 assassination of its leader Benazir Bhutto, bagged 85 seats while PML-N of former premier Nawaz Sharif was at the second position with 65. If the two parties jointly form a government, a possibility they had been exploring for the past few days, Musharraf could be impeached in Parliament. With results out for 248 of the 269 National Assembly seats for which the polling took place yesterday, the ruling PML-Q got only 37 seats. So far, MQM had received 19 seats, ANP 10, PPP(S) 1 and others 31. Polling was not held in three Nation Assembly constituencies while the Election Commission suspended results for two. Many were surprised by the results...

2/20/2008 12:12:35 AM
Early Times Reporter Jammu | Feb 19 The Food Corporation of India has locked an amount of Rs 8.50 Crores due to the terminally sick J&K State Road Transport Corporation for its failure to deliver in time. In a candid submission, the Managing Director of SRTC today told the legislatures' Committee on Public Undertakings that there is no way out to revive corporation except for support from the government. The committee concluded that some harsh decisions are required to be taken for revival of SRTC. The PUC had its meeting under the chairpersonship of MLA Yogesh Sawhney to review the overall functioning of SRTC and suggested various measures for improvement. While discussing a specific ...

In right beginning from wrong end, Omar says coalition has failed
2/20/2008 12:11:57 AM
Early Times Reporter Jammu | Feb 18 After taking some spent forces in the party fold, the National Conference president Omar Abdullah is upbeat about his prospects as he embarks on a well declared elections campaign. Omar has started his public outreach program from a wrong end of Jammu and Kashmir. After addressing a "massive" public meeting at Lakhanpur –the gateway of Jammu and Kashmir, Omar will be meeting people in Kathua for next three days. However, the history is witness that the National Conference has hardly got anything from Kathua district. Political analysts believe that Omar is trying to walk on the footprint of his illustrious grandfather Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah. On bein...

2/20/2008 12:11:19 AM
Early Times Reporter Jammu | Feb 19 An upcoming major telecom player in Jammu and Kashmir, the Idea Cellular is reportedly aghast with the central Department of Telecommunications for holding up the allocation of frequencies. Soz getting acts together for uphill task
2/20/2008 12:10:30 AM
Early Times Reporter Jammu | Feb 19 The Union Water Resources Minister Saif-ud-Soz is expected to be in this politically surcharged winter capital city coming Sunday. He is reported to be getting his acts together as the task ahead is quite uphill. Soz, a relatively new face in the Congress party, is now the president of the organization which has a history of factionalism and lobbyism in Jammu and Kashmir. His appointment comes after a silent but stiff opposition from many lead players in state unit of the Congress. The task ahead for the new PCC president is literally twin edged. One that he has to narrow down the lobbyism and factionalism in the party and second that he has to face e...

Emerging political scenario in Pakistan
2/20/2008 12:07:37 AM
Early Times Special Correspondent Jammu | Feb 19 A new chapter has been written in the political history of Pakistan. It is for the first time since the creation of Pakistan in 1947 that the incumbent ruling dispensation has suffered a major defeat and the opposition parties have together gained the majority in the national assembly as well as in the states. Although there is a split verdict in favour of two major opposition parties, the former Prime Minister led Pakistan Muslim League (PML) (N) and the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) of assassinated former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto and presently led by her husband Asif Zaradari. The rout of Pakistan Muslim League (Q) called Kings Party,...
