| | | | | | | How well did the FM perform? | | The ANN jury’s verdict | | How well did the finance minister perform? The answer, it seems, depends on who you ask. The DNA jury, which included top-notch businessmen, investment bankers, public sector stalwarts, and hard-boiled economists, offered opinions ranging from poor to excellent. While the economists were, not unexpectedly, unimpressed by Chidambaram’s exertions, businessmen were more charitable, as the budget did not rock anybody’s boat. The net result: the jury returned a split verdict, in a range from 1.4 to ... | |

What is more, confidence level in the Indian economy, in India and abroad, is very high. The conditions were thus most favourable for the finance minister to present a courageous and path-breaking budget. Instead, this budget has turned out to be a non-event.
The finance minister has not addressed the underlying concerns in the economy. Inflation has been kept artificially low by not passing on the full impact of petroleum price increases to consumers. The Rangarajan committee recommendations have not been touched in the budget. The government is m...

The good thing is that the budget does not set the clock backward on reforms even though it does not attempt anything big or bold.
Don’t rock anybody’s boat. That’s the approach he took in his tax proposals. The existing tax regime has given the centre 20% growth in gross tax revenues for three years running. Savings, investment and GDP growth have all been impressive. The tax-GDP ratio is set to go up to 11.2% next fiscal even without any tinkering. So, Chidambaram let that be.
After last year’s overhaul, no ch...
