India's first military satellite to be launched in August

New Delhi, Jun 10 India will launch its first dedicated military satellite in August to give the country the capability to monitor missile launches in its neighbourhood. The dedicated military reconnaissance satellite, CARTOSAT 2A, will be launched on a Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle rocket by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) in the first week of August, an official said here. CARTOSAT 2A will boast of spatial resolution and will be loaded with cameras that can supply advanced imagery. It will cater to military and intelligence specifications than any existing Indian satelite. The launch of the satellite will fulfil a long- standing demand from the armed forces for a dedicated reconnaissance spacecraft. Launch of the first military satellite will be rapidly followed by the launch of two more advanced imaging satellites by next year to give India the capability of keeping an eye round-the-clock on the region surrounding the country. Four more Indians confirmed dead in Oman cyclone

New Delhi, Jun 10 Four more Indians have died in the devastating cyclone that hit Oman early this week, taking the toll of Indians to six even as six others remain missing. The bodies of Prithvi Pal Singh, Prempal Singh (both from Punjab), Anil Kumar of Ottapalam at Palakkad in Kerala and Sarawana Kumar Pillai have been found, Minister of State for External Affairs E Ahamed told reporters here. Details about Pillai is not known as only an ID card has been recovered from his body, he said. New Delhi, June 10 As India made a fresh proposal to break logjam in talks on the civil nuclear deal, External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee asked Washington not to ‘transfer its problems’ to New Delhi. Emphasising that reprocessing right was ‘absolutely necessary’ for India, Mukherjee maintained that the government would not like the nuclear cooperation agreement to have any impact on the country's indigenous strategic programme. "They (the US) say that they have some problems. Pak to join global initiative to combat nuclear terrorism

ISLAMABAD, JUNE 10 Pakistan is set to participate in a global initiative announced by the US and Russia to combat nuclear terrorism, but keeping its military nuclear programme outside its ambit, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has said. "While joining the initiative, Pakistan has declared that the Global Initiative does not cover Pakistan's military nuclear facilities or activities," Pakistan Foreign Ministry spokesperson Tasnim Aslam said in a statement yesterday. The global initiative, which was jointly announced by the US and Russia at the July 2006 G-8 Summit in St Petersburg, aims at developing international cooperation to combat nuclear terrorism. ISLAMABAD, JUNE 10 Relatives of missing Indian prisoners of war today said the evidence collected during their visit to Pakistani jails has reinforced their belief that their loved ones are languishing in this country and asked President Pervez Musharraf to order an investigation to help locate them. Devender Padha Jammu | June 10 The 50,000 year old fragile Elephant fossil, which was kept deserted under the tin shed for the last seven years near the excavation site at Galandar near Pampore in Kashmir, has certainly assumed much of significance for Kashmir University (KU) authorities. Reason, a six-member Jammu University (JU) team led by Prof GM Bhat brought the fossil, wrapped in plaster-of-paris, to Jammu for further research and better preservation. Jammu, June 10 Jammu and Kashmir Police have ordered a probe into the circumstances that forced an accused in Ramgarh Police Station, near Jammu, to commit suicide. Gurnam Singh, 25, of Jandrah village on the India-Pakistan international border in Ramgarh area, about 40 Kms southwest of Jammu, was found hanging from a ceiling fan Saturday. He was charged with the murder of a woman Rajinder Kaur of his village.
