Delhi Police's claim about operation in J-K under cloud
9/19/2007 10:33:21 PM
New Delhi | Sep 19 Delhi Police's claim about participating in a gun battle that resulted in the killing of two top militants in Bandipora has come under a cloud as their counterparts in Jammu and Kashmir have said that the operation was executed by the army with assistance from local police. While Delhi Police claimed yesterday that it had been at the spot in Bandipora, highly placed sources in Jammu and Kashmir Police said only local Sub-Divisional Police Officer Ghulam Jeelani and his team accompanied a Rashtriya Rifle unit to Khayyar village in the district to trap Jaish-e-Mohammed militants. The sources said Delhi Police had on September 15 shared a "technical input", which was further developed by Central security agencies and passed on to the army and Kashmir Police for action. The input related to the movement of JeM commander Ammanullah Bhukhari and his men from Khayyar on the intervening night of September 17-18. The army unit and the Special Operations Group of Kashmir Police laid a trap and killed two militants -- divisional commander Abu Bakar alias Osman of P...

No unilateral truce during Ramadan: Antony
9/19/2007 10:32:29 PM
New Delhi | Sep 19 The Indian government Wednesday ruled out a unilateral truce with terrorist groups in Jammu and Kashmir during the holy month of Ramadan, saying the onus lay on the other side. "We cannot decide unilaterally. It depends on them (militant groups) as well," Defence Minister A.K. Antony told on the sidelines of a Coast Guard conference here. "How do I know what the militants will do? How can I speak for the militants?" the minister added. He was responding to a question on whether the government was contemplating a truce in Kashmir's hinterland during Ramadan. Earlier this month, a Pakistan-based Kashmiri militant grouping said it was ready for a truce during Ramadan i...

Civilian trek to Siachen put on hold
9/19/2007 10:31:31 PM
Early Times Reporter Jammu | Sep 19 The fate of the first-ever civilian trek to Siachen hangs in a balance after the army decided to postpone it. The army decision comes on the heels of Pakistan’s protests over promoting tourism on the Siachen glacier. Trekkers were informed about the development on Monday night. The army has not given them fresh dates, triggering speculation and disappointment. The 20 civilian trekkers had been asked to assemble at Leh on September 19. Explaining the rescheduling, an army source said the Siachen trek file was yet to be cleared by the defence ministry. Management professor Charuhas Joshi, who had to cancel his flight at the last moment, said he was d...

Maya Behenji has a 'let down' soul in Jammu
9/19/2007 10:29:23 PM
Early Times Reporter Jammu, Sept 19: He lost a government job and a promising practice to fight a cause with a party which championed the voice of the oppressed. Once when he stood up to speak for his own right and cause, the party did not spare a moment to show him the door. Till few months back Dr Sat Paul was a symbol of aggressive politics, a big name in the Dalit politics and warrior of a cause. Today he stands in oblivions. Neither has he that job, nor practice and not even the platform and the cause he espoused. The doors have literally shut upon him. Just back from Uttar Pradesh, where he had gone to have a final word with the BSP supremo Mayawati, Dr Sat Paul has returned wi...

Stepped up militancy vindicates Indian stand
9/19/2007 10:02:25 PM
Early Times Reporter Jammu | Sep 19 The security forces and more so our police force, which are subjected to brick bats, in terms of sharp criticism whenever terrorists succeed in striking in a big way, causing loss of human lives and destruction, attributing the same to the failure of our intelligence agencies, should also deserve bouquets when they foil a well knit terrorists plot and defeat the nefarious design of the merchants of death. In this regard the foiling of attempt by the militants on the life of Chief Minister, Ghulam Nabi Azad, who was scheduled to visit his home town and his constituency, Bhaderwah yesterday, to address his electorates, deserves kudos. The security forces ...
