| Azad requests PM on Hja quota | | | |
CHANDIGARH, SEPTEMBER 28 – Chief Minister Mr. Ghulam Nabi Azad at the conclave of Chief Ministers of northern India here today took up the matter with Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh for enhancing the Haj quota as a special case for Jammu and Kashmir state. He intimated the Prime Minister that a large number of people applied for performing Haj but due to limited quota most of the people could not be accommodated from the state.
The Chief Minister urged Dr. Manmohan Singh to take up the matter with the Government of Saudi Arabia for increasing the Haj quota so that all those who have applied for performing Haj from the state this year are accommodated.

New York, Sep 28 At the end of his weeklong visit to United
Nations and New York, Defence Minister Pranab Mukherjee expressed
optimism about India getting a permanent seat in an expanded UN
Security Council.
Mr Mukherjee is also hopeful that Shashi Tharoor, India's
candidate for the post of Secretary-General, will succeed Kofi Annam.
"It's high time for reforms at the United Nations, including the
Security Council," he told a news conference yesterday. "There is
consensus on UN reforms, but not on how to achieve the same. We are
confident that India will find a place among the permanent members."

Jammu, Sep 28 Twenty-five houses were completely gutted in an accidental fire in Doda district and property worth several lakhs have been destroyed, officials said today.
However, there is no loss of life or injury.
The fire started accidentaly from one house yesterday and spread to other houses in Nowgam village, officials said.
The fire continued till last night completely gutting 25 houses, they said.
Authorities are trying to assess the loss in the fire and also would be providing help to the affected families, they added.
