Is Kupwara only backward district in entire State…? | Cabinet meeting in remote area after 3 months......! | | Early Times Report Jammu, Sept 12: Even as the coalition Government through its Information Department has come out with detailed argument in trying to justify the purpose of convening of Cabinet meeting today in the remote and backward area of Machil in Kupwara district, the explanations, no matter loaded with some people oriented decisions, are far from being convincing. The exercise is being viewed purely as grooming 'own' constituencies apparently to 'reap' the political harvest later. That the Government has ascribed the decision of holding Cabinet meetings occasionally in far flung areas to ascertain the problems and difficulties being faced by the people of these areas is a noble initiative provided it is sustained and continued with apolitical motives and interests, without giving consideration to the political background of the constituencies and areas they choose for convening the meeting. But as of now, there appears no such criteria or yardstick of the Government in doing so. There are visible and loud reasons to explain the flawed approach of Government in this initiative. One that it is being done in a very half hearted manner in terms of the regularity and timings, much in contrast to what the Chief Minister Omar Abdullah himself had announced some three months back. He said and even announced that his Government has decided to hold at least one meeting, once a month in far flung areas of the State and probably, the day chosen for this special Cabinet meeting was first Wednesday of the month. The Government started this novel and noble initiative from the Kupwara district, selecting Tanghdar as the venue for a number of reasons, some of them valid indeed. It is a different matter that whether the decisions taken in that meeting have been fully implemented or not and whether that has made some difference in the lives of the people on ground or not. But the Government faltered as no such meeting was held in any far flung and backward area thereafter and it has been over three months since the first meeting was convened in Tanghdar. One is also prompted to ask that why and how the Government is determining backwardness in any area and therefore arriving at urgency of holding Cabinet meeting in that area in presence of the entire caravan of Ministers. While political and power corridors are silent in asking this criteria, one wonders is district Kupwara the only district which is backward and far flung which is why the second meeting, that too after over three months has been convened in Machil area of this district. Is there no other district backward and remote in the entire State which deserves attention of the Cabinet…? Though the Government in its detailed press note has indicated a schedule of more such meetings has been drawn and these are on anvil, administrative sources suggested nothing has been decided so far and no district has been chosen among backward category for next Cabinet meeting. |
