KP organizations for maintaining minority status of Gandhi College Sgr, warn against its taking over by Govt | | | Early Times Report JAMMU,Sept 20: The Kashmiri Pandit organizations are up in arms against the Government and ready for an offensive to thwart its move to take over the Gandhi College of Srinagar. The leaders of various KP organizations who held an informal meeting here to discuss the proposed move have decided to launch a unified struggle to scuttle the proposal. According to high placed sources, the State Government has mooted a proposal to take over the management of the college on the pattern of Srinagar Islamia College but the same has been rejected by the KP organizations who have shown their total displeasure against the move. The sources said the Hindu Education Society Kashmir (HESK) has approached the Chief Minister with the request that the Government should take over the college in Srinagar which is run by the members of the majority community as the Kashmiri Pandits after their mass exodus from Valley have lost control of the College. The students studying in this prestigious minority institute also belong to majority community while the teaching staff and management is also from the same community. The HESK which was managing the college till 1989-90 had totally lost the control over it and the present management of the college also wanted that the Government should take over it. The leaders of HESK also called on Chief Minister in this regard and submitted a memorandum to him and stressed on taking over of the College by the Government with Chief Minister as its chairman. This proposal has created an apprehension among the leaders of KP organizations that this way the community will be deprived of one of the prestigious colleges which it has nurtured for years together. The leaders of Pandit organizations have decided to send a memorandum to Chief Minister and Higher Education Minister asking them not to go ahead with the move as this will be strongly resisted by the community. These leaders have said the move is a part of the conspiracy to deprive the minority community of its prestigious institutes also. They said instead of promoting the college as a minority institution the Government in league with some disgruntled elements is going to take over the college. The KP leaders have also contacted some of the other organizations outside the State to seek their opinion on the issue and they have decided even to meet the leaders in Union Government in this regard. Some KP leaders while opposing the move said that on one hand the Government is claiming to bring the community back to Kashmir valley and on the other it was depriving the community of its institutions. They said the religious places land has already been encroached upon by land mafia in different places of Kashmir Valley by mutating the land records in league with revenue officials and now the Government was eyeing the minority institutions which are linked to Pandits history. The KP leaders have also warned the HESK leaders not to persuade the case before the Government as it will evoke a strong reaction from the community. |
