Centre decides against revocation of AFSPA | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Sept 20: The Centre has decided not to go for even partial lifting of Armed Forces Special Forces Act (AFSPA) from Jammu and Sringar districts, as demanded by the Chief Minister. Union Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde in a recent meeting with Defence Minister has agreed with the view of the Army-which has consistently held the stand it needs the Act for its counter-insurgency operation. "Defence Minister AK Antony discussed in details the repercussions and connotations of even partial revocation of the Act. He also briefed him about the thinking of the Army. Home Minister not only agreed with the stand of the Army but gave assurance nothing such thing will take place atleast in immediate future," said a source from Delhi. The Army chief Gen Bikram Singh had already stated the final call be taken by the Government on this issue as Army has given its assessment of the situation. Home Minister Shinde, unlike his predecessor, holds a conservative view especially on the issues of security of the nation and doesn't indent to venture into adventurism for the political whims of one person. Sources said Shinde categorically told Antony that Home Ministry will go by the assessment of the Defence Ministry. It's after this meeting that Army is not speaking its mouth on this issues, which it did in the past, as it has been assured by the Home Minister that nothing against its interest would be done. GoC Northern Command, Lt General KT Parnaik also said last evening that it is an issue with Centre and the State and eventually Government will take a call. The Army chief General Bikram Singh earlier during his visit to the State had told CM Omar that it will not possible for Army to accept its demand for revocation of AFPSA. It's because of this consistent stand of the Army, that CM had repeatedly said Army is not agreeing to its stand and had even said he fails to understand the logic of the Army. There is thinking in the Army that because of the development in Afghanistan and China venturing into PoK and regularly doing acts of transgression it would be unwise to give any leverage to the terrorists as Army is too much tied down on other fronts. |
