Diarrhoea outbreak in Tangmarg, 103 take ill | | | Early Times Report Srinagar, Sept 22 : At least 103 people were taken ill after drinking 'contaminated' water in Tangmarg area of North Kashmir on Saturday, officials said, adding, most of the patients were suffering from diarrhea and vomiting. Hundreds of people this morning complained of diarrhea and vomiting were rushed to different hospitals and health centers and were later shifted to Sub District Hospital. Block Medical Officer, Dr Asif Khan, confirmed the admission of 103 patients from different areas due to diarrhea and vomiting. "The outbreak could have been due to water borne diseases (WBD), we have treated all the received patients promptly and their condition is stable now.” Four people, among those taken ill, complained of severe symptoms were shifted to Srinagar for treatment. “We have supplied Chlorine pills to the patients and trained them how to use them," Dr Khan said. Mushtaq Lone, a local, said people who fell sick mostly belong to Qazipora, Ferozpora, Chandilora, Treran, Hari-Watnoo, Bichipora, Kunzar, Mangloora, Kharpora and other villages. "The outbreak is mainly due to the unsafe water supplied from the water reservoirs which people have been complaining are not cleaned and the filtration is not properly done," Lone said. Syed Mudasir, a local of Kunzar, said Azad Ahmad Shah a PDD employee was on his duty in Kharpora village, where he drank from a tap to quench his thirst. “Five minutes later he fell sick and was rushed to the hospital,” he said. In the afternoon a vehicle was seen plying on Srinagar-Gulmarg Road making announcement on a microphone: “Tresh Chezev Pakvith" (Drink only boiled water). Dr Khan said the situation was not worrying. “It has been controlled and a team of doctors has been called from Srinagar to look into the matter,” he said. Pertinently the water of Nullah Ferozpora— from which drinking water is supplied— was considered safe till recent times, but not anymore, locals said. |
