Anger brewing against PM, Congress | "Anti-People Economic Policies" | | Neha JAMMU, Sept 22: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, who was only recently accused by an international magazine of leading the most "corrupt Government" and was described as an "under achiever" by another international daily, today faced a situation no one had ever thought of. It's true that most of the political parties have been charging the Congress and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh-led Union Government with manipulating rules and twisting certain institutions to benefit selfish corporate houses and corrupt elements in the Government and administration. It's also true that they are demanding resignation of the Prime Minister saying he and his Government have ruined India politically and economically and that he has forfeited his right to lead the country. It's also true that the people across the country are totally fed up by the present dispensation and holding the Congress responsible for all the ills facing them. It's also true that the recent economic measures undertaken by the Union Government have dramatically changed the country's socio-political scenario, with almost everyone cursing the Prime Minister and the Congress party and praying for the collapse of what they call anti-poor and pro-rich corrupt and insensitive Government. The September 20 nationwide shutdown was nothing but a manifestation of the nation's anger against the Prime Minister and the Congress party. But no one had ever anticipated that the Prime Minister would face such an awkward situation as he faced today at New Delhi's Vigyan Bhawan in the presence of an elite group comprising Indians and foreigners. What happened today at the highly protected Vigyan Bhawan has only brought shame to India and painted the Indian administration black in the eyes of the international community, besides giving another opportunity to the opposition to beat the Prime Minister from right and left and make his position more untenable. What really happened at Vigyan Bhawan where the Prime Minister was to address an international conference on "Economic Growth in Asia and Changes of Corporate Environment"? The conference, organised by the Indian Law Institute (ILI), was attended by legal luminaries from across Asia, besides Chief Justice of India SH Kapadia and Union Law Minister Salman Khurshid. As the Prime Minister got up to deliver his address, a RJD activist and member of the Supreme Court Bar Association Santosh Kumar Suman (32), who actually belongs to Bihar, suddenly stood up on the desk, took off his shirt and shouted anti-Prime Minister slogans. "Corrupt Prime Minister Go Back; Corrupt Prime Minister Go Back, Go Back; Rollback Diesel Prices; Rollback Diesel Prices; Corrupt Prime Minister Go Back, Go Back". He raised such anti-Prime Minister slogans for almost 60 seconds with everyone in the hall, including the security staff, completely taken aback. The Prime Minister was stunned. The estranged Santosh Kumar Suman can be described as a symbol of Indian unrest. It was no wonder that all the critics of the Prime Minister and the Congress did not condemn the act. They only said that such incidents are wound to happen, as the discontent caused by the economic policies is widespread and as the alienated Indian society wants this Government to go. The Prime Minister and the Congress party would commit a grave mistake if they take the today's incident lightly and conduct themselves in the manner they have conducted so far. They need to feel the people's pulse and refashion their political and economic policies. |
