Cong says party well within its right to do so…. | On to Omar's 'displeasure' on Soz letter: Soz-Azad 'harmony' lends credence to raising pitch | | Early Times Report jammu, Sept 27: A day after Chief Minister Omar Abdullah expressed 'displeasure ' the way JKPCC president Prof Saif-u-Din Soz shot a letter to him reminding Congress' stand on need to empower the Panchayats, Congress today hit back asserting it was well within its right to reiterate and assert over the issue till some practical action is taken in the matter. Omar had also taken strong notice of what he said the letter or any statement meant to be communicated to Chief Minister should not have been leaked to media. "Congress leadership is well within its right , ours being the major alliance party in coalition to raise and rake up issues which matter in the State…….the party has always been clear on its stand on incorporating 73rd and 74th Constitutional amendments in the State Act and if the party leadership has reiterated this in the situation that has arose post killings and resignations of Panches, it should not be seen as strong reaction or offending statement…", said senior leader and MLC Ravinder Sharma. The party is firm and shall press for it at all levels , he further said adding the entire unit of State Congress is for it and shall build up pressure on NC which has been showing resistance to it. While this assertion came today by a leader who is considered to be a close confidante of Prof Soz, sources within the party said what has lent credence to the raising of pitch on empowerment of Panchayats by Congress is the fact that both factions led by Ghulam Nabi Azad and Prof Soz have actually showed 'united face' over the issue by coming out with statements in favour of the stand of party during the last few days during their stay in Valley. The unanimity and synchronized tone in the statements by Azad and Soz have been seen for the first time even though a formal resolution was passed in the party convention held in Srinagar in May this year strongly asking the Government to ahead with incorporating amendments as it has been done in the rest of the country. Pertinently, the resolution was presented by Azad and seconded by Prof Soz in the convention and later passed unanimously. However, the renewed assertion and 'unity' of the leaders over the issue has unnerved NC and put the leadership on back foot this time, sources said adding that the two factions would continue to maintain this 'united face' as both are aware that the intervention at the highest level from High Command by none other than Rahul Gandhi is seen as serious and meaningful. Sources also maintained that Congress leadership would convey to NC in clear terms that coalition cannot work unilaterally and no party can afford to take unilateral decisions which concern welfare of masses. Sources added that Congress would ask NC that it will have to explain to the masses that how can a system which is beneficial in rest of the country not be so for the J&K . |
