| What do TATAs and Birlas need in JK? | | Besides Rahul's generosity, Omar has to play Modi | | ET Report JAMMU, Oct 6: The All India Congress Committee (AICC) General Secretary, Rahul Gandhi being a Kashmiri did the people of his homeland a favour by bringing top businessmen of the country along. The TATAs and Birlas showed keen interest to invest in Rahul's ancestral abode. While the people of Kashmir have been moved by Rahul's generosity, the State Government is likely to spoil the broth. Incidentally this is not the first time when investors have been brought to the State. Like TATAs and Birlas they also promised a lot. Some of them were interested in translating their promises into reality but for want of NOCs from various departments the projects were shelved. The example of Dr Shawl can be cited here. The noted doctor was interested in a super specialty hospital in the summer capital. Sick of the cumbersome procedure Shawl ultimately found himself in huge controversy with the Minister of State for Home, Nasir Aslam Wani filing a defamation case against him. Addressing a press conference on June 6, 2010, Dr Shawl had accused Nasir Aslam Wani of creating 'unwarranted' hurdles in raising a cardiology hospital near the picturesque Zabarwan foothills of Srinagar. The hospital was to be constructed by Dr Shawl's philanthropic foundation. Dr Shawl had said that Wani was responsible for "sabotaging and derailing" the Rs 100 crore hospital project with "unwarranted hurdles". He had said, Wani was "in league with some influential people" who, according to him, were bent upon failing his plan. Shawl had alleged that some 'influential people' had been permitted to raise houses and structures around the same site which the Minister had been describing to him as "restricted under Master Plan". Dr Shawl said 40 kanals of the land purchased by him for his dream project, was neither forest land nor wildlife site that could have justified the Minister's objections. Wani took serious note of the allegations and filed a case against Shawl in the court of Principal District and Sessions Judge, Srinagar. Ultimately, Shawl tendered an unconditional apology and the dream project was shelved forever. The Chief Minister does not like his Gujarat counterpart, Narender Singh Modi but he has many a lesson to learn from him. He may be a fascist (for Omar and Company) but as far as developmental of Gujarat is concerned, Modi makes no compromises. The TATA NANO project could be shifted to Gujarat only when Modi acted fast and did not waste time in formalities. However, in this neglected land, formalities take toll of otherwise vibrant industrial projects. Unless Omar plays Modi, the dream of outside investment in Jammu and Kashmir won't come true. |
