| NC led coalition misled 'Rahul' over panchayats issue: Panchayat members | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Jammu, Oct 9: While accusing All India Congress Committee (AICC) general secretary Rahul Gandhi for 'taking a U-turn' on his word' during his recently concluded visit to valley, elected Panchayat members today also alleged that he was 'misled' by the Jammu and Kashmir government over the issues of panchs and sarpanchs besides the 73rd Amendment. The Panchayat members alleged that Rahul Gandhi had taken a 'U-turn' in Kashmir Valley during his visit and despite assurances from the Government of India he remained pliable and workable for the coalition and failed to be transparent on settling the matter. "Gandhi's behaviour was absolutely different during his visit and it surprised us,' Shafiq Mir, Convener, All Jammu and Kashmir Panchayat Conference, here said and added recently during a meeting in New Delhi, Mr Gandhi had assured them security cover besides empowerment of elected Panchayat representatives but surprisingly, the things in valley turned to its sharp contrast when he took U- turn and kept his words aside." "'The AICC General Secretary played with words during his visit to Kashmir saying that empowerment is State Government's prerogative for which he assured us in Delhi,' he added. The convener said, "JKPCC Chief Saif-ud-Din Soz and Senior leader Mohan Prakash have been asked to remain in dialogue with the state and the Centre governments on Panchayat issue. 'Rahul Gandhi cannot sail in two boats. He either has to settle political issues or keep 'friendship' with the Chief Minister Omar Abdullah," the sarpanch elected from hilly district of Rajouri said. Meanwhile another elected sarpanch Anil Kumar lamented that issue of empowerment was thoroughly discussed with AICC General Secretary, Home Ministry and Delhi Policy Group but when it came to the much awaited visit of Rahul in valley things were totally different. He also alleged that he (Rahul) was 'misled' by the Jammu and Kashmir Government and some of the senior Congress leaders, which forced Mr Gandhi to play 'diplomatic' in Srinagar. Pertinent here to mention that a large number of panchs and sarpanchs have submitted their resignation following two panchayat members were killed since the landmark panchayat polls held in the state last year after a gap of 30 years. Besides this 'threatening' posters have been surfaced in many areas of Kashmir since early this year asking panchs and sarpanchs to resign from their posts or face dire consequences. |
