| GDC Samba students protest against corporal punishment | | Ransack Principal's vehicle, block Jammu-Pathankot Highway | | Asif Iqbal Naik jammu, Oct 11: Students of Govt Degree College Samba took to streets against corporal punishment given by the college Principal to one of their colleague identified as Ram Chander of B.A Part 1. The students alleged that the Principal Sat Pal Sharma gave corporal punishment to one student after he failed to produce identity card issued by the college authorities. They said the Principal slapped the victim student several time in front of other students as a result of which he received injuries in his left ear and blood oozed out of his ear. Soon after the incident, the students registered protest against the college Principal and demanded an apology from him. The agitating students took to streets when the Principal refused to tender an apology. They blocked Jammu-Pathankot National Highway for several hours. The students also ransacked the vehicle of erring Principal. The Principal however blamed four students for creating indiscipline in the college. He said: "There is co-education in the college having 85% girl students. During routine checking in the morning, the photograph of a student was missing from the identity card. In order to maintain discipline, college administration suspended four students and informed their parents about the action taken by the college. The students feel uncomfortable with the steps taken by the college. The suspended students are now trying to create an atmosphere of uncertainty in the college to force the college authorities to cancel their suspension." The students accuse the Principal of pursuing a dictatorial policy. They said that College Principal is unnecessary harassing the students on the name of rules and regulation which is in no way acceptable to the students of the college. The students also condemned the action of Principal. The agitating students were pacified by the intervention of District Administration and police. They have decided to continue boycott of classes till the Principal was removed. |
