| Udhampur, Poonch share volleyball titles | | | early times report JAMMU, Oct 19: District Udhampur and Poonch boys emerged divisional champions in under-17 and under-14 categories respectively in the inter-district volleyball tournament held under the banner of Department of Youth Services and Sports (DYSS) at Youth Hostel Nagrota courts, here today. For the under-14 title, Poonch boys outplayed district Ramban 2-1 (22-25, 25-15, 25-16). Earlier, in the semifinals, played today, Poonch beat Rajouri in straight but close sets 25-22, 25-21 while Ramban trounced district Reasi, again in straight sets 25-12, 25-17. In the under-17 final, district Udhampur faced tough resistance from Jammu district before they make it a 3-0 (25-21, 25-23, 25-20) win. Earlier, in the semifinals, Udhampur beat district Poonch 2-0 (25-16, 25-16) while Jammu downed district Kathua 25-13, 25-23. In the finals and valedictory function, Divisional Commissioner, Jammu, Pardeep Gupta was chief guest, who gave away winners and runners-up trophies. Speaking to the finalist teams and other distinguished gathering, Divisional Commissioner said that the DYSS plays a great role in inculcating spirit of sports among the young school going boys and girls at the grass root level by covering the far off districts of the state. He further said that in the last few months a lot of national level activities took place at the Summer Capital and a lot more expected to take place at Jammu also in the coming months. He was all praise for the Minister for Sports, R S Chib for development of sports in the state. Earlier, Deputy Director DYSS Jammu, Ashok Kumar welcomed the chief guest amidst presentation of a brief note of the activities of the department. Among others present were District Youth Services and Sports Officer, Jammu, Tirath Ram, District Officer, Udhampur, Sukhdev Singh, ID Soni, MM Joshi and Ranjit Kalra. In all, 220 boys drawn from nine districts of Jammu Division took part in this competition. Today's matches were officiated by the penal of referees, Raman Gupta, Shishi Sharma, Vikrant Singh, Anju Gupta, Tarseem Singh, Jagjit Singh, Sanjay Kumar and Mohd Wasim Khan. |
