Early Times Report

Jammu, Nov 3: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah finally responded to the LPG crises in a big way-bigger than even Range Rover-by surrendering two of his LPG connections. The people of this state are now indebted to young Chief Minister for announcing such a big austerity measure today morning which certainly made the morning of poor LPG consumers good outside the registration/revalidation counters in twin cities of Jammu and Srinagar.
Now people in the state could foresee the end of the LPG crises and they are delighted even if they could not lit the lantern because of the shortage of K-oil in the evening. This big initiative of surrendering two LPG connections by the Chief Minister in Srinagar has generated a lot of hope in the public who are expecting many more austerity measures in near future. Immaterial whether Omar Abdullah as chief minister of this state after surrendering two LPG connections may find solace in the fact that the entire Jammu and Kashmir is reeling under severe power and LPG crisis, and that unlike Punjab his government may not be able to respond with an austerity drive that begins from the government offices. And unlike Punjab government's latest initiative to ban use
of air conditioners in all its offices, boards and corporations, Omar's coalition government has so far responded with scheduled and unscheduled long hours of power curtailment even in the electronically
metered areas, where unrestricted power supply had been promised, people have started identifying the areas where Omar as a responsible citizen of this state can initiate many more austerity measures in an attempt to identify himself with the general public who are due to vote him out/in in 2014.
By today's initiative of surrendering two LPG connections, people are drawing some interesting inferences. They appreciate Omar could not do much for them for being in coalition because it is difficult to do "anything right in coalition" but personally he (Omar) is capable rather courageous to do the things.
People even have started whispering in private that though Omar as Chief Minister could not even prevail upon his cabinet colleagues of his own party because they have solemnly affirmed not to listen to Omar for their political carrier being more than Omar's age but in his private and personal capacity he is capable og doing many things. It is in this context that people have identified a few areas where
they expect Omar will respond quickly and efficiently.
Immediately, they think Omar sahib will abandon his latest car Range Rover which starts at Rs.1,05,11014 in India. Notwithstanding the fact the government offices and the top functionaries of the government continue to enjoy unlimited power supply, full appliances switched on at all the times, even though many of them happen to be defaulters as far as payment of power bills is concerned, people expect Omar will surrender the VVIP supply lines at his twin official residences in Jammu and Srinagar in order to identify himself with the people of the state who are the victims of politics of identity.
People expect that Omar will take many more austerity measures in his personal capacity notwithstanding the fact that he could not even ensure adequate supply of ration to the people on rare occasions like Eid and Dewali. After all people of this state have been practicing the austerity measures since long who foot their bills regularly but the breach exists at top where austerity has been defined by wastage of power and other perks that the higher ups in the administrative set up enjoy at the expense of state exchequer. Now when the people have appreciated rather realized the usefulness of twitter, they expect tweet - a -day - in response to the issues they have identified.
