Early Times Report

Jammu, Nov 3: The issue of reshuffle and expansion of cabinet in Omar Abdullah government has been 'tamed and tossed' for nearly a year now to the extent that it has assumed an 'insignificant' light, even as it is most important exercise in any government for refurbishing its image and improve the functioning of the government. Congress which has been 'taming it like a mirage', is now clear from its strategy and approach that the leadership is actually playing a second fiddle in the matter , for its own reasons. A number of dates and even names given at frequent intervals during the past few months is only a posturing by the leaders aimed to keep hopes alive, albeit on a false note. Is this strategy drifting and dissuading staunch loyalists apart…..?
If sources within the party are to be believed , there is a strong sense of resentment brewing among contenders and their supports against Azad for what they see as making false commitments over this issue publicly as well as privately. On June 19 this year when Union Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad asserted loudly in the Congress convention at Srinagar that it was only a matter of one month and within this period party would get back its cabinet berths in the coalition, it generated a strong wave of optimism not only among the contenders but cadres and workers also felt jubilant with this assertion none other than from the stalwart who is a key decider in this matter. Nearly four months on , the issue is still unsettled, no matter every month a fresh speculation of date and even names makes the rounds.
Azad, in a bid to keep his flock of loyalists in good humor, is learnt, is giving indications to even those who are not even in reckoning as far as induction of the ministers for its two vacant berths is concerned. Sources said Azad who is considered to be master of playing such moves , is assuring almost all those who are vying to get ministerial berth with his support, whereas the fact remains that there are only two vacant berths against which only two senior ministers of the party can find place.
Sources said lately after the UPA government at Centre effected reshuffle, an impression has been given that J&K will also witness rejig of the cabinet on the lines it was done at Centre, implying that some senior ministers from both the allies would be dropped and some new faces would be accommodated. However, that remains a secondary task once the preliminary things for the exercise get finalized . Well placed sources confirmed that it is the deliberate delay in ' meeting of minds' between the two stalwarts at the local level which is pushing ahead and delaying this exercise. When Durbar was closed in Srinagar, there were rounds of rumours, this time on some firm ground that it will be done soon after it re opens in Jammu , as of now it appears a far fetched exercise.
