| Vakil seeks action against land grabber politicians; advices ministers, bureaucrats against interfering in inquiry | | | Early Times Report RAFIABAD, Nov 4: With Durbar opening in Jammu, ex-Minister and senior Congress leader Abdul Gani Vakil today reiterated demand for action against allegedly corrupt Ministers, Bureaucrats and politicians especially those involved in grabbing of hundreds of Kanals of state and forest land. Obliquely hitting out at PHE Minister Taj Mohi-ud-din, Vakil said that corrupt cannot hide themselves behind the closed doors. He was addressing convocation at Rafiabad today. He added that Chief Minister has to take action against the corrupt ministers in his cabinet. He said any politician, minister or bureaucrat accused of being involved in land grabbing or corruption should prove his innocence. "I am responsible for myself. Similar is the case with those who are being accused of corruption and land grabbing. They would do great service to Congress if they prove their innocence," said Vakil. He added that corruption is eating vitals of the state and it is the only reason for its backwardness and under-development besides it is the main factor responsible for distancing people especially youth from the mainstream. Vakil said, becoming a hurdle in investigation by seeking intervention or favors from different quarters is raising doubts amongst people. "Congress cannot be silent on corruption issue as this has made life of poor people miserable. Government should leave no stone unturned in eradicating this menace so that common man gets justice," added Vakil. He said that his tirade against corruption will continue for the welfare of people who believe that tax payers' money is going to drain. My crusade against corruption will not stop till guilty is punished, said Vakil. "I am following the mission of Congress President Sonia Gandhi and its General Secretary Rahul Gandhi on corruption. Sonia and Rahul instructions are that every Congress man should raise voice against the corruption even if the person involved is from within the party. I am following their orders and want to make the Congress strong," said Vakil. Vakil appreciated the statement of Sonia Gandhi today in which she said corruption is a cancer which affects the poor the most and declared that whoever is found guilty will not be spared. He asked party workers and leaders to strengthen hands of AICC chief Sonia Gandhi and spread the programmes and policies of Congress in far off places of the State. Vakil expressed grave concern over "neglected fruit industry of J&K." He said: "Over five lakh people here are associated with horticulture and are solely dependent on this industry for their livelihood. But indifferent attitude of government towards these people in Sopore has left many high and dry." During past few years the fruit growers have been badly hit due to unpredictable weather conditions, hail storms and hostile conditions but no one from the government side ever bothered to assess the damages caused to the crops or compensate the farmers. Vakil urged the chief minister Omar Abdullah to pay attention towards this sector and help fruit growers in a bigger way by extending incentives towards them. Besides others who addressed the convention included Sr. Congress leader and MLC Haji Ali Mohammad Bhat, General Secretary J&K PCC Dr. Abdul Ahad Yatoo, Youth Congress leader Altaf Ahmad Malik, Senior Congress leaders Haji Mohammad Afzal Khan, Tariq Ahmad Mir and Brij Nath Nehru.
