| Omar does political somersault but says no flip-flops | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Nov 6: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah does political somersault but has the temerity to public say that there have been no flip-flops. Omar Abdullah on the opening of the Darbar move said that no deadline has been fixed for the revocation of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act. He said he has fruitful discussion with the Home Minister. Exactly an year before, just few days before the opening of the Darbar in Jammu, addressing a police function in Srinagar, Omar Abdullah had said that AFSPA will go away for some areas before the Darbar move. He not only made this statement but in an interview to private TV channel had said that he has fixed the deadline as the issue can't be allowed to fester for too long. The statement evoked sharp reaction and latter some damage control exercise- aimed to dilute the sharp and straight remark- was made by the Government in flip-flop press statement. However, a year latter Omar Abdullah, who still is the Chief Minister, now says that no dead line has been fixed. Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde after a visit to the State, had said that AFSPA will not be revoked now as the situation is not conducive. However, Omar said: "I have fruitful discussion with the Home Minister … but beyond that I can't share much of the details with you (media)." The Chief Minister said there have been no flip-flops on the Block Development Council elections and certain provisions of the 73rd Amendment would be incorporated in the State Act to strengthen the Panchayats. Omar Abdullah had first - apparently unilaterally- announced elections, despite reservations by the Congress. Making an intervention in the Assembly in Srinagar, when Harsh Dev Singh was speaking- he had said "Elections would be held. It's actually people like you who are not interested in empowerment of panchayats. The elections process wouldn't be derailed." As the pressure build on him from the Cong high command, a hurriedly held Cabinet meeting early last month, Omar not only cancelled the elections, but also accepted to the demand for reservations in BDC as demanded by the Cong. |
