| At Hiranagar Azad advocates 'reservation' for women | | In Jammu presents himself completely in 'non political mode' 'Shall talk about politics next week…..' | | Early Times Report Jammu/ Hiranagar, Nov 6: On a whirlwind tour of Jammu once again Union Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad attended a couple of functions, marking and making his presence conspicuous amidst politicians, lawyers, prominent citizens besides attending a Women's Cooperative Conference. All the functions were on non political platforms which is why he conveniently desisted from making any political statement. In the Hiranagar Women's conference, however, the Congress stalwart strongly advocated reservation for women at all levels in the institution of Panchayats. Union Health Minister and former Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad's 'ability' to accommodate himself in any 'environment' and every platform is widely known, this year typically having been devoted by him to non political organizations. Despite being a political stalwart, he has shifted the 'choice' of functions, perhaps purposefully. However, in all such functions in past and today as well, the presence of his staunch loyalists and senior leaders of Congress remained thick, with Deputy Chief Minister Tara Chand in the forefront of the group. The function lauded as Mega social event by Azad himself, in Jammu at sprawling lawns of Hari Niwas Palace was organized by Jammu Lawyers under the name and banner of 'Eid, Diwali, Gurupurab and Christmas Milan' in which former Chief Minister of the State was the chief guest. Surrounded by a galaxy of intellectuals, politicians from various hues, prominent citizens and besides a thick gathering people from all walks of society Azad talked tall about the ideals of secularism, communal harmony etc. He said that such occasions further cement bonds of brotherhood, communal harmony and national integration and we should optimally utilize these events for creating a harmonious society. So far so good and the intent of the organizers of having organized function at such a grand scale. While extending greetings to people for all such festival, Azad even exhorted that it being purely non political function people from all sections should participate irrespective of their political or religious affiliations. While Union Health Minister desisted to make any comment or statement on political lines in the function, contending it was a non political function, he, however, avoided the media with assurance that he would give one next week when he is scheduled to come again. However, in the Hiranagar rally, he did make a mention and assured the women folk that they would soon be given reservations at the level of Block, Panchayat and District levels. |
