| Highlighting labourers' demands, CITU observes protest at Udhampur | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Udhampur, Nov 6: J&K State Committee of Centre of Indian Trade Unions observed protest at Mini Stadium Udhampur in response to the nationwide call given by Construction Workers Federation of India (CWFI) an affiliate of CITU to demand enforcement of labour laws for the cause and welfare of working class at various developmental projects. Speaking on the occasion M Y Tarigami, State President of CITU who was special invitee on the occasion said, "We have been demanding for strict enforcement of labour laws and stringent punitive measures for violation of labour laws. The violation of labour laws by the employers with connivance of law enforcement machinery has become a major instrument for increasing profit where workers alone are targeted for cost minimisation in the production or services and in fact 90 percent of disputes and conflicts going on indifferent workplaces in the country related to just non-implementation of labour laws." He stressed that the average level of wages is going down owing to sharp decline in the size of the permanent workers and widespread contractual employment through contractors and demanded Rs 10,000/- as minimum wages for all workers. Besides this Tarigami demanded measures to check growing prices of essential commodities and building materials, housing for all workers. CITU President demanded Central Welfare Acts for Construction Workers should be implemented in all states and further welcomed the establishment of Welfare Board for Construction Workers by the J&K government. He also demanded that benefits should be extended to registered workers without any further delay. Further he demanded that all the workers working in construction activities in four lane and Railway projects should be registered and benefits extended to them immediately and prohibition of child labour at earliest. Sham Prasad Kesar, Senior Leader of CITU and Om Parkash, General Secretary CITU said that today all the construction workers all over the country are on strike and demonstrating in support of their demands. They pointed out the gross violation of labour laws especially by the agencies engaged in four lane and railway construction projects in state. Among others who spoke on the occasion included Arshad Malik, Abdul Rashid, President and General. Secretary of Construction of tunnel & Four Lane Workers Union, Sunita Bhagat, Gen secretary, Asha Workers Union of J&K. A large number of Construction Workers particularly working at four lane roads and railways projects participated in this protest. |
