| Corrupt officials ruling the roost at Kashmir University | | | early times report Srinagar, Nov 14: In brazen violation of norms two Assistant Registrars of Kashmir University have managed to appoint their relatives through backdoor appointments in the Varsity. Sources told Early Times that Assistant Registrar Asmat Kawoos managed to appoint four of her relatives in the KU during former Vice Chancellor Riyaz Punjabi's tenure. "Not only Asmat managed to appoint her relatives she was also promoted from Section Officer to Assistant Registrar in Punjabi's tenure in clear violation of norms. Due to her close proximity with Punjabi she was also given additional charge of Public Information Officer (PIO) of the KU," they said. The KU sources said that Asmat has been denying information to applicants under RTI as she is herself involved in so many wrongdoings. "A senior journalist who had filed an RTI in the KU last year in June on backdoor appointments hasn't been provided the information till date. Asmat has been denying the information to the journo on the pretext that higher officials have asked her to do so," they added. She has also been misusing University vehicle for her personal use. "Though Asmat isn't entitled for official vehicle she has been allotted the vehicle due to her close proximity with Varsity higher ups," sources said. Another Assistant Registrar Abdul Rashid Dar, sources said, has also managed to get his two relatives appointed in the KU. Dar presently holds charges of Transport, Development, VC Secretariat and Hospitality and Protocol. "How has been one official given four charges? While most of the Assistant Registrars in the KU hold just one charge the blue-eyed Dar has been given four assignments. He has made lakhs of rupees during the last three years," alleged a senior KU official. Both Asmat and Dar, he said, were close aides of outgoing Registrar Syed Fayaz. "Now it is upto the new Registrar (Zaffar Reshi) to take cognizance and order an investigation into all the bunglings done by these two corrupt officials," he demanded. Reliable sources told ET that hundreds of backdoor appointments have been made in the KU during the tenure of former VC Riyaz Punjabi. The appointments, they said, were made in administration, transport, examination, Iqbal Library and various other departments of the KU. "From computer operators to data entry operators and gardeners to sweepers every type of backdoor appointments have been made." "Even some officials have managed to get their domestic servants appointed as class IV employees. In some cases candidates who paid money were also appointed," they added.
