Cong High Command under pressure to act against coalition partner
11/14/2012 11:18:20 PM
early times report
JAMMU, Nov 14: The Congress High Command is under pressure to break ties with National Conference (NC) or seek a undertaking from the Party that it will reign in its additional general secretary and former Minister Dr Mustafa Kamaal who is repeatedly making objectionable statements and harming the national cause in trouble-torn J&K State.
Hundreds of Congress activists especially most from Kashmir valley had sent telegrams and letters through- e -mail to All India Congress Committee chief and UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi expressing their resentment over the objectionable statement made by the NC leader and failure of the Party to seek an explanation from the Party which is heading the coalition in J&K.
According to sources over 200 telegrams from Kashmir Valley maximum of them from Congress activists from South Kashmir districts of Anantnag, Pulwama, Kulgam and Shopian have urged Mrs Gandhi to act against the NC as the Party has crossed all limits and it has also violated the coalition dharma totally.
Sources said the Congress workers in their letters while expressing their resentment against Dr Kamaal's outbursts and anti India tirade launched by him saying that India is enemy number 1 of Kashmiris is slated to damage the image of Congress if party continued to be in coalition as the opposition parties will exploit this to their own advantage especially in Jammu region and they can damage the prospectus of the party in future elections.
Sources said the letter further has revealed that Dr Kamaal was playing in the hands of opposition and there can by every possibility that he might have given the statement on the behest of some anti Congress parties to help his party gain ground in Kashmir as well as help some non Congress parties in consolidating their position in next elections.
Sources said that though Chief Minister Omar Abdullah rejected the statement of his uncle but the party has failed to take action against its senor leader so far. It may be recalled that Dr Kamaal was last time stripped of the organisational post following his controversial statements which posed a threat to smooth functioning of coalition in the state.
However, this time the NC leadership did not take any such step except rejecting the statement. Though there is brewing resentment among Congress workers at grass route level against the statement yet some Ministers from the party tried to down play the same feigning ignorance about the same. The only reason for Congress ministers was that they wanted to tread a safe path by denying the statement and they don't want that the coalition should break as they would lose the loaf of the bread. These ministers hardly care that NC leader's statement can damage the party's poll prospects in next elections.
Dr Mustafa Kamaal in his recent statement has said that India is our enemy number one. The calculated move by NC leader was aimed to kill two birds with one stone, say political analysts. One was to give an impression to Party's political constituency in Kashmir remains intact and other was to help the opposition parties in Jammu region to exploit the situation in their advantage to damage the prospectus of Congress in the next general elections.
