Jammu, Nov 23: Government schools in Jammu district though have emerged successful in enrolling a large number of students, but majority of them still are facing a shortage of teachers, infrastructure and many other allied problems as a result which is badly affecting their studies. Of the total 52,000 posts vacant in the government education sector, 9,443 posts are vacant in the School Education Department. These posts comprise 2,459 gazetted, 5,439 non-gazetted and 1,545 Class IV posts. The post of Chairman, in the J&K Board of School Education, has been vacant for the past so many months after the retirement of the earlier chairman. Various education revolving directors are needed for effective working of education in Jammu and this is yet to be fulfilled. Sources within the education department said, "Maximum number of primary, high and secondary schools of the district are facing the shortage of teachers regardless the count of good teachers are far away". They further added, "There are number of institutions which are running without proper guidance of school headmasters and headmistresses". They said, "The problem of vacancy of teachers in schools is now becoming a big problem but we are doing our best to curb the problem as soon as possible so that students do not face any kind of problem related to their studies". "Moreover we have in the past year appointed more than one hundred and fifty- five teachers for the upper senior wing and hundred and twenty-three for the middle or junior wing. We have even spend lakhs of rupees on the up gradation of schools facilities, infrastructure plus on their studies as well", he further added. A student Kavita Padha, of class tenth said, "Due to the shortage of teachers in our school, the existing staff is forced to take additional classes, knowing that those teachers are not very well versed in the other subjects than their own subjects". She further added, "As a result, not only our results show a decline besides tarnishing image of school in the education sphere as well". The statistics of the government document revels that of the total 7438 sanctioned posts of teachers in Jammu district, 2984 posts lies vacant. It has also been noted in addition that there were 1,11,531 students enrolled in the government schools in the district, but these schools did not have the requisite number of teachers. "A total of 1,546 posts, including 1,039 of teacher, 146 of master, 42 of lecturer and 204 posts of various local schools, are lying vacant in the district," lamented one education official further adding, "not enough actions have been taken in this regard but if these vacuum is ever filled there will be a silver lining to create hope for those looking for the 'best' from the government educational institutions. |
