Kishtwar, Nov 23: Though double bench of Delhi High acquitted two Kashmiri youths facing capital punishment in connection with 1996 Lajpat Nagar blast slamming Delhi police for "serious lapses" in probe in the infamous bomb blast case, two Kashmiri youths Mirza Nissar Hussain and Mohammad Naushad alleged to be the members of militant group Jammu and Kashmir Islamic Front have lost what cannot be compensated.
The ghost of the 1996 Lajpat Nagar blast started haunting Delhi police and top brass in Union Home Ministry soon after Kishtwar police arrested key ISI suspect Mehraj-ud-Din alias Dand son of Ghulam Ahmed resident of Naginbagh Sopore on September 9, 2012 when he was on his way to valley. Soon after the arrest of Mehraj-ud-Din by Kishtwar police, the curtain started falling on major terror strike that took place in India since last over two decades. It was during interrogation of Mehraj-ud-Din that he confessed about his involvement in Lajpat Nagar blast case. The accused Mehraj-ud-Din spilled the beans about his and ISI involvement not only in 1996 Lajpat Nagar blast case, but also confessed about his role in infamous Kandhar Hijacking. Soon after surfacing of Mehraj-ud-Din's name in 1996 Lajpath Nagar blast case, it has become imperative to put him to trial so that others languishing in jail for 17 long years can see the light of the day.
Besides confessing his role in Lajpat Nagar blast and Kandhar hijacking, Mehraj-ud-Din also confessed his links with Pakistani spy agency ISI and underworld Don Dawood Ibrahim. It also came to the fore that accuse Mehraj-ud-Din alias Dand alias Javed was involved 2002 attack on US Information Center at Kolkata, beside he was allegedly involved in pumping/transferring fake currency into India and also planned to target Indian officials during 2002 SAARC summit in Nepal in which the then Prime Minister of India Atal Behari Vajpayee also participated. Mehraj-ud-Din also confessed about infiltrating at least 70 top rank Jesh/Hizb/LeT militant commander in India.
It is worthwhile to mention that after succumbing to media pressure, Kishtwar police shifted the accuse Mehraj-ud-Din to Joint Interrogation Center Jammu for extracting vital Information from him pertaining to the functioning of ISI and Underworld in India and neighboring country Nepal from where the ISI and underworld launched several terror attack on India, but even after the lapse of nearly two months the report from JIC Jammu is still awaited, the reason best known to the officials at the helm of the affairs.
The question however remains, how long shall those at the helm of affairs remain tight lipped over revelations of Mehraj-ud-Din which could save more innocents languishing in jails for over a decade.
