| Why shame on me or you?It is shame on Government | | Rape victim cremated | | Early Times Report Jammu, Dec 30: The 23-year old gangrape victim is dead.In her death nation became alive. Alas!the Government is dead.It is insensitive to the rising demand for amendment to the rape law. It is deaf to the demand for convening a special session of the Parliament where amendment to the criminal law could be adopted. No, no, the Govern-ment is not insensitive to "Damini's" death. It is quite active.See union Home Minister,S.K.Shinde,and Delhi Chief Minister,Sheila Dixit, being present when the body of the rape victim was cremated.Their presence should be treated as a symbol of Government's sympathy for the victim's parents. I received one SMS from a retired professor of English literature. The SMS said "shame on me.Damn me.Gangrape and death!"I responded "why shame on you. Shame on the Government that continues to remain insensitive to anger, anguish, annoyance and anxiety of millions of people in the country." The professor replied."Yes the Government is insensitive even when slogans like death to rapists have hit the streets of London." What is amazing is the way incidents of rape, sexual harassment and molestation were reported from various cities and towns, especially in Delhi and its adjoining areas, during the last 12 days of mourning over the rape and torture of the 23-year old girl in a moving bus in Delhi on December 16. What an irony of fate ? While the body of the rape victim was being cremated a teenaged girl was subjected to molestation and sexual harassment in a bus in Delhi. The conductor has been arrested and the driver has lost the job and the driving licence. Is it sufficient ? Will he and others like him lose the licence for raping or for molesting innocent women ?Possibly not till a new law was not adopted which would provide death to the rapists and life imprisonment to those involved in molestation and sexual harassment of women. The Government is not insensitive. The President of India,Pranab Mukherjee,in a statement, expressed his grief and anguish over the rape of the girl and her consequent death.Other bigwigs in the Government too have condemned the incident. They have shed a tear or two.But they have neither heard slogans demanding death for the rapists nor watched the moist eyes of millions lighting candles as a mark of respect for the victim and as a symbol of their anger and anguish against the brutal crime. The Government does not want to rape Parliamentary democracy by enacting any law that provides for death to rapists,to profiteers and to those indulging in adulteration of consumer items, including medicines and milk.Is it because majority of politicians have been found involved in cases of rape, abductions, murders, profiteering and in selling spurious drugs and eatables ? Let the law makers reply this question. India has already earned a bad name for making available unsafe drinking water, forcing foreigners to bank on imported water, mineral water and beer.Let the Government initiate steps so that India may not be dubbed as a country of rapists. Set up special courts for trying rape cases and let the courts announce their verdict within a month or so.And the purpose of setting fast track courts can be served only if the rape law provides for death sentence or life imprisonment for rapists.Let there be no "Bhashans".Let the Government act fast and amend the rape law.
