| "Omar to link development with settlement of political issues" | | | early time report Jammu, Jan 5: With next year's assembly elections in mind, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has plans oflinking development activities in Jammu and Kashmir with the settlement of political issues this year. Party sources said that Omar believes that peace was a must for progress in various development sch-emes and since peace was linked to the settlement of the Kashmir issue he would try to see India and Pakistan resolve all the bilateral problems. "Besides, favouring settlement of bilateral problems between India and Pakistan, Omar would continue to prevail upon the Government of India to concede his long demand for withdrawal of AFSPA from the state. He has conveyed to the centre that if lifting of the AFSPA from the entire state was not possible and feasible it could be withdrawn from five districts where militancy related activities and violence had touched zero level," they said. "However, Chief Minister has one regret. He rightly believes that for the resolution of Kashmir Islamabad needed to talk to the elected representatives of people of Jammu and Kashmir and New Delhi to the valley based separatists. But neither Islamabad is willing to talk to those elected to the Assembly in Jammu and Kashmir nor New Delhi is prepared to resume its dialogue process with the Hurriyat Conference leaders," they added. A senior party leader said Omar has stated while his Government's focus was still on the development of Jammu and Kashmir, the Kashmir issue needs resolution. "That can happen only through dialogue: the dialogue between India and Pakistan; the talks between Pakistan and elected representatives. Likewise, Delhi talking to the Hurriyat Conference," he said. But the problem for Omar is that the Hurriyat is not willing to talk to Delhi, and Pakistan is not interested in talking to the elected representative. A political analyst said in this situation Omar has to divert his energies on goading and guiding India and Pakistan for resolving the Kashmir issue and giving thrust to the timely execution of various development schemes so that he was able to fulfil his promise made by him in 2008, on meeting peoples need for Bijli, Sadak and Pani that would help him in winning the next Assembly poll, due in 2014. |
