"Gujjars and Bakerwals have always been on the forefront while fighting the enemies by assisting the forces at the cost of their lives on the border without having any weapon in their hand," Vakil said while addressing a Gujjar and Bakerwal Conference here which was presided over by senior Congress leader Choudhary Anwar Phambra. He claimed that it is Congress only who always thinks about welfare and upliftment of the Gujjars and "it is because of the efforts of the Congress that the Central Government supported by Congress granted status of ST to Gujjars in the J&K." He said the Congress had backed up the then Prime Minister on the condition of granting ST status to this community. Vakil blamed other parties for exploiting the sentiments of the Gujjars for their political gains and nothing concrete or practical has been done for the welfare of this community till today by these parties." The former minister said Congress leadership especially Nehru family has always maintained deep relationship with the Gujjar and Bakerwal community and they value the sacrifices of Gujjars for the nation. Addressing the convention former MP and senior Congress leader Janak Raj Gupta said that Congress has always advocated for equitable development of all the three regions of the State "as it will strengthen the bond of unity and integrity."
