Private tuition centres mushrooming in city, authorities in slumber

SONIKA
JAMMU, Jan 15: The mushrooming of private coaching centers in Jammu city has not only raised serious doubts on their check by the authorities but has led to the deterioration of education system over a period of time.
Despite many discussions and debates on the ill effects of the private tuitions, the influx of private coaching centers in Jammu city is alarming. Recently, the state government banned the private tuitions by government teachers but many government teachers and other highly qualified lecturers have openly flouted the government norms and are in the business of earning extra money from private tuitions.
One can easily notice private coaching centers flourishing in every nook and corner of the Jammu city.
This malpractice by the government teachers along with the precursors of private coaching centers has corrupted the entire education system.
"We shape careers," "Our result speaks in volume", "The best guideline for your child…" are some of the flashy claims of the private coaching centers in Jammu city. These coaching centers are in hurry of earning chunks of money from the students and on the other side there is no guarantee on the quality of education been delivered to the students.
Although the claims made by these private coaching centers are high yet the aggrieved students have other story to share.
"Even though the government schools have highly qualified teachers but the absenteeism of teachers is so high that the students fail to share their queries. The educational woes of government schools are unaccountable," says Bikram of the higher secondary passed student of government school.
Another student Sanjay gives the reason that a feeling of inadequacy in class-room activities - be it lectures, demonstrations or practicals, has given rise to students who feel that a detailed study of the subjects can be achieved only through private tuition.
There are plenty of student voices who share that the renowned private coaching institutes of Jammu city who at times have shown their unprofessional attitude with the students by not completing the course on time, absenteeism of teachers, not repeating the lectures more than once and at times misbehaving with the students. "For the preparation of medical or engineering they straightway charge in thousands. But when it comes to the study material, the quality is not worth thousands and there is hardly any relaxation in fees," adds the students.
At the end of the day it is ultimately the self study that works for us, share the students who admit that a check should be kept on the unaccounted rise in the number of coaching institutes. It needs to be mention over here that in many other states of India strict action has been taken by the education department.
Director, School Education, Jammu Dev Lata could not be contacted despite repeated attempts.
