| Secretary of unrecognized Hockey Association accused of molestation | | Sports Council sleeps over mess of Sports Associations | | Abodh Sharma Jammu, Jan 15: The accusation of molestation on an office bearer of an unrecognized, defunct association who projected himself as the coach of the State Women's Hockey team apparently in a bid to evade Police action has unlid a can of worms yet again, but the State Sports Council, the representative amalgamate of the recognized sports associations and the apex sports body of the State has chosen to watch from a distance the muck created by these sports associations like a lame duck. It is a pity that the secretary of the non existent J&K Hockey Association who tainted the entire sports fraternity by his deplorable act is a history sheeter and has been behind bars for serious unlawful activities. Though it is not an isolated incident of unrecognized sports association misleading the players of the State to make them participate in unrecognized national championships organized by unrecognized federations, what is more disturbing is the fact that J&K Sports Council has done nothing to stop such elements from representing the State under its name and banner. While the unrecognized sports associations have been creating mess in the State sporting arena and indulging in unlawful activities including demanding money from players for participation and issuing fictitious certificates to them, even the recognized associations have been violating all Government guidelines and most them have become private limited companies with same office bearers running the show for decades together. The elections conducted by these associations are mere eye wash and same office bearers are elected repeatedly by dummy electoral college. It is pertinent to mention here that despite repeated letters of the Union Ministry of Sports urging J&K Government to implement its guidelines which state that no office bearer of any sports association should hold office more than twice, and no one can hold office of a sports association after 70 years of age. Interestingly, both president and the general secretary of the Jammu and Kashmir Olympic Association have held offices for over 30 years now and both are well above 70s. The J&K State Sports Council has, however, maintained a stoic silence and never written to the JKOA on this violation of norms. It is imperative on the part of the J&K SSC to immediately act against sports associations which have violated the Government norms with impunity and ensure some discipline on their part. As a symbolic action some of the defaulting associations can be put on notice for disaffiliation; but would the Council show some teeth? |
