Massive changes in NC party structure Omar announces political arrival, hands over party to closest aides
Nasir to look after Kashmir, Rana Jammu
1/16/2013 3:34:19 AM
Syed Junaid Hashmi
Jammu, Jan 15: To quell dissent, prevent rebellion and announce beginning of a new era, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has brought about sweeping changes in party structure of National Conference (NC).
A loud and clear message of the beginning of Omar's era has been sent out to the entire cadre of National Conference (NC). By assigning two of his close aides, Devinder Singh Rana and Nasir Aslam Wani, the politically significant task of looking after the party rank and file for the next one and a half year, Omar has send a strong message to the older guard to either perform or perish.
It has been said loud and clear that no non-sense would be tolerated neither would the office of Chief Minister give ear to the complaints against any of the party functionaries or the ones who have been inducted in the party afresh. Chief Minister had parted away with two of his closest confidants but not without seeking heavy assignment for them from the NC patron. Observers feel that the two would continue to call the shots both in the Government affairs as well as in the party.
Era of NC old guard is gone and fresh blood, especially ones enjoying proximity with Chief Minister Omar Abdullah would now be calling the shots in the party. Omar has managed to oust Farooq's closest aide Surjeet Singh Salathia and his man, Ajay Sadhotra in the Council of Ministers as Planning and Development Minister. Nazir Gurezi and Sajjad Kitchloo alongwith Choudhary Ramzan have got in on merit.
Kitchloo was Spokesman of the party while Ramzan had been waiting for induction since day 1 of the NC-Congress coalition taking over reigns of power in the State. Others have got in to ensure regional representation issue is taken care of. The party structure is now Omar oriented and does not have much to indicate the power old guards and stalwarts, once enjoyed in the party during either Sheikh's or Farooq's time.
Devinder Rana, who was regarded as Chief Minister's closest aide alongwith Nasir Aslam Wani, who was until yesterday Home Minister have both been made Provincial Presidents of Jammu and Kashmir provinces respectively. Surjeet Singh Salathia, who enjoys a cozy relationship with NC Patron Dr. Farooq Abdullah, has been given responsibility of senior vice-president of the party. Observers feel that the changes have been affected in a dictatorial manner without even seeking a primary response from the ones, who are already looking after the party since the last four years.
They said that the changes are more to prevent outburst of anger and frustration among the NC leaders, who have been shown the door or who have not been accommodated. Consumer Affairs and Public Distribution (CAPD) Minister Qamar Ali Akhoon has been made State vice-president alongwith three others namely ex-Animal Husbandry Minister Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi, ex-Provincial President Rattan Lal Gupta and ex-Pahari Board Chairman Mushtaq Ahmad Bukhari.
Ex-Higher Education Minister Abdul Gani Malik has been made central secretary and handed charge of Parliamentary constituency Kathua-Udhampur-Doda. Rashpal Singh has been made In-charge Parliamentary constituency Jammu-Poonch-Rajouri while Dr, Mehboob Beig has been made central secretary Kashmir. Javed Dar has been appointed as new NC District President of Baramulla.
