| Afternoon sunshine brings relief to Valley | | Air traffic resumes, major roads cleared of snow | | early times report Srinagar, Jan 19 (KNS): Normal life across the Kashmir was affected after the Valley witnessed moderate to heavy snowfall. However, sun shone on Saturday afternoon bringing much needed respite to people apart from increase in day temperature, however, the night temperatures are expected to dip further in view of clear sky. Various areas including Srinagar witnessed snowfall on Thursday resulting in power shut down and decline in public movement with transport on roads remaining thin. However, the valley's connection to rest of the world was restored after landing of flights at the Srinagar airport. "The air traffic resumed this afternoon and many flights operated from the airport. Two additional flights also arrived at the airport keeping in view the rush to passengers", Superintendent of Police Airport Security told KNS. Pertinently, the valley was cut off from the rest of the country amid suspension of air traffic and closure of Jammu-Srinagar national highway. Snowfall, which began on Thursday, has continued and resulted in the snapping of electricity and water supply lines in several parts of the Valley, official sources said. Snow from various important roads has been cleared while the snow from various interior roads has not been cleared reportedly resulting in to force inhabitants to stay inside. Howerver, most of the city roads and roads connecting various district headquarters have been cleared of snow to ensure smooth movement of traffic. An official of the disaster management cell said that the ski resort of Gulmarg in north Kashmir had received the highest snowfall with three feet of fresh snow accumulated there. Meanwhile, various localities have demanded CAPD authorities to make its checking squad more active in the markets as with the snowfall some shopkeepers are selling the essential commodities on exorbitant rates. Valleyities have also appealed the authorities to restore power and water supply on war basis. "Why authorities fail to provide services to the common people when they need it most?", questioned a local resident of Srinagar.(KNS) |
