Srinagar, Feb 22: In view of the protest program of the separatist groups, the government on Friday imposed strict restrictions to foil the plans of separatists to hold protests. The curfew was imposed in 11 police station areas of Srinagar city and Budgam district. Restrictions were also imposed in Sopore, Baramulla and Bandipora. Anantnag, Shopian, Pulwama and Kulgam towns. Reports said that police were not allowing any pedestrian or vehicular movement in the city areas where restrictions have been imposed. Pertinently, both factions of Hurriyat conference and JKLF had called for a strike and protests on Friday to press for their demand for return of Parliament attack convict M Afzal Guru's body who was send to gallows on February 9. Despite the strict restrictions in place, protests broke out in several parts of north Kashmir and south Kashmir. Reports of protests were received from north Kashmir's Hajin, Saderkote, Bandipora, Trehgam areas and Khudwani area in south Kashmir. However, Srinagar city remained calm amidst strict restrictions imposed by the authorities. Meanwhile Hurriyat Conference chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq who was detained at Srinagar airport on Thursday as he arrived from Delhi, continued to be under house arrest. Mirwaiz was scheduled to address a joint meeting of moderate separatist leaders in Srinagar office "to chalk out a strategy" to bring back the remains of Guru, who is buried inside Tihar jail. The Mirwaiz was likely to offer unification progarmme to other hard-line separatist groups for "a coordinated effort". However, the police had sealed the Hurriyat Conference office in Srinagar on Wednesday evening to abort the meeting. The authorities are leaving nothing to chance in the Valley. It has tightened its noose around separatists to stop them from galvanizing mass protests over the hanging of Guru. Around a dozen separatists remain under house arrest. Police sources said around 250 stone pelters were arrested from Srinagar, north and south Kashmir since the hanging of Guru. |
