| Budget session likely to be stormy-PDP all set to corner coalition Govt | | | Bashir Assad Jammu, Feb 22: The Budget Session of J&K Assembly beginning February 28 looks set to be stormy with Opposition vowing to strongly raise issues like corruption and non-governance even though Omar Abdullah led coalition Government is exploring all the possibilities to defend its "policies" during the month long session. A possible confrontation between Government and opposition PDP over Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru's hanging cannot be ruled out given the reports in some sections of national media that Omar was taken into confidence by the UPA Government in advance over the hanging. Leader of the Opposition Mehbooba Mufti has already stated that the State Government cannot shy away from the shouldering the responsibility especially when the ruling National Conference is a part of the UPA Government at Centre. The month long Session will begin with the customary address by Governor NN Vohra to the joint sitting of the Assembly and Legislative Council on February 28. The Session has a heavy legislative agenda, including as many as 65 private member bills for introduction and consideration and passage besides 10 to 12 Government bills including the one pending since last session. The annual budget will be presented on March 5 and the Economic Survey the next day. PDP patron Mufti Mohammad Sayeed who left for Delhi today to condole the death of his all time friend Sudhir Sareen who died in US after a brief illness, is scheduled to chair the legislature party meeting on Wednesday , February 27 in the evening as the party president Mehbooba Mufti is also scheduled to arrive here on the same day from Srinagar. A senior PDP leader told Early Times that there were lot of "challenges" which needed to be raised in the Assembly with "full strength". While categorizing these issues the senior PDP leader said corruption cases against the Ministers, erosion of democratic institutions, non governance, unemployment, backdoor appointments, misappropriation of public money under Centrally Sponsored Schemes and other related issues are likely to dominate the session. The poor education standard in Government schools may also rock the Assembly as a senior PDP leader Nizamuddin Bhat is likely to give a call attention motion on the issue. For another PDP leader and MLA Darhal, Choudhary Zuklfkar Ali, non functioning of Statuary bodies like J&K State Backward Classes Commission, under staff State Accountability Commission, non functioning of State Human Rights Commission and Vigilance Commission are the issues of major public concern. However, Parliamentary Affairs Minister, Mir Saifullah who left for Saudi Arabia to perform Ummerah the other day claimed that the Government is fully prepared to deal with all issues. |
