Early Times REport

JAMMU, Apr 19: A deputation of Destitute and Handicapped Welfare Association (DAHWA), NGO, called on tourism Minister, G. A. Mir and apprised him of several issues aimed at development of tourism infrastructure in Khoon and adjoining parts.
Led by Association’s Chairperson, S. S. Sumbria, the deputation demanded early sanction and implementation of Rs 5 crore project developments and beautification of Khooneshwar Shiv Temple at Khoon, Majalta. This prestigious project has been formulated by the Tourism department which will give a new look to this temple of great historic significance thus adding one more destination to rural tourism besides generating employment for local youth. This temple occupies 17th place in most revered religious spots in north zone which is being thronged by over 4 lakh visitors every year especially on Maha-Shivratri mela, Baisakhi mela and other such occasions.
Mir issued on spot instructions to the concerned to take up the proposed project with him for necessary action.
Sumbria apprised the Minister that development of this place has greater relevance as it is located in the midst of Vaishno Devi and Sukrala Mata and pilgrims of both these destinations can also visit the temple thus giving a big boost to rural economy and tourism in the area. The temple is also only 25 to 30 kms from famous Mansar Lake, one of the most visited places in Jammu region.
Meanwhile, the deputation also called on Forest Minister, Mian Altaf and demanded a firewood depot for cremation ground, Khoon. The deputation informed the Minister that the cremation grounds near forests cause damage to forest trees for cremation purposes and if such cremation grounds are provided firewood depots their loss to green wealth can be tackled. Most of such grounds are located near forests in rural areas. so this became important to look into this grave matter.
The Minister issued on spot instructions to concerned DFO to look into the issue for immediate redressal.
