Formulate a comprehensive plan for Bamboo plantation in J&K: Mir

JAMMU, Apr 22: Minister for Agriculture, Mr Ghulam Hassan Mir today directed Agriculture and Forest department jointly formulate a comprehensive plan for Bamboo Plantation in three regions of the state. He asked them to start with a pilot project immediately during this current year without wasting any time.
The Minister said this at 6th Meeting of Bamboo steering Committee under National Bamboo Mission (NBM) here this afternoon.
Mr Mir said that the climatic conditions for bamboo cultivation in J&K is very much feasible adding that the survival rate of bamboo is up to the mark as shown by the agriculture department in different farms of the state by plantation of bamboo in their farms. He asked both the departments to work collectively for the project as the bamboo cultivation would help to revive the socio economic status of farmers of the State.
The Minister said that abundant waste land is available in all three regions of the state and steps should be taken place to utilise it under bamboo cultivation. He said that bamboos are of great importance in Agro- forestry. He said it is extensively used in soil erosion, flood control, consolidation of stream banks and stabilising moving landslides and slips.
Mr. Mir said that steps are under way to release the central funding under NBM at the earliest so that initiatives would be taken for implementing the programme letter in sprit.
The Meeting also discussed the cultivation of Medicinal plants with collaboration of forest department. It was informed that 572 medicinal species are available in the state and steps are being taken to cultivate them in a large scale.
Commissioner Secretary, Agriculture, Dr. Asgar Samoon, Principal Chief Conservative Forest, Mr. Vinod Ranjan and other senior officers of Forest and Agriculture department were present in the meeting.
