4/22/2013 10:38:10 PM

Sunderbani (Rajouri): Sale of 800 kgs of Vermi-Compost (organic manure) prepared from Municipal Waste at Solid Waste management (Vermi- Composting) Project at Thandapani, Sunderbani of district Rajouri was thrown open for the general public today by the District Development Commissioner, Saugat Biswas at the project site.
The fully functional project is a first of its kind in the state of J&K which involves the stabilization of organic solid waste through earthworm consumption for the conversion of organic material to worm castings. The project at village Thandapani in district Rajouri commenced on 1st February 2008 and was handed over to the Municipal Committee Sunderbani in June 2010, however it remained non-functional till it was inspected by Saugat Biswas, District Development Commissioner, Rajouri in July 2012. Soon after, meetings were conducted on site and bottlenecks which were hampering the project were removed by the team constituted by the DDC, under the supervision of the SDM, Nowshera, Rajinder Khajuria. Within months the project was made functional. Provision of electricity and water supply was made for the project by the DDC. Speaking on the occasion, Saugat Biswas informed “Presently the project for the Solid Waste Management of Rajouri town is still on hold due to environmental clearance of the selected site and resistance from the local villagers. After the success of vermi-composting project at Sunderbani (Rajouri); vermi-composting project for Rajouri, has been finalised to be set up at Kesar Gala near village Balli, tehsil Kalakot, under the Special Task Force (STF), with eco-friendly method for the disposal of municipal waste/garbage. We plan to cater to the need of Kalakot town besides Rajouri town in the project that will come up under STF. I had on my earlier visit to the site at Kesar Gala (near Balli) explained to the nearby villagers the clean organic process of vermi-composting, and promised them a visit to the successfully running project at Thandapani (at Sundarbani) plant. Today when we are in a position to open subsidised sale of the vermin-compost, we have invited the villagers form Rajouri/Kalakot to see the functioning of the vermin-compost plant. About thirty sarpanches, panches and local farmers from Balli village of Kalakote were also invited in the function. We are happy that the villagers have understood the organic process and are now more than willing to give even their private land for the purpose. I am hopeful that the project at Kesar Gala will come up soon and we would not have to transport municipal waste from Rajouri to the far off Thandapani (Sundarbani)”
Biswas further informed “The success of the solid waste management through vermi-composting technology under which about 18-20 tons of municipal garbage from Rajouri town and approximately 10-12 tons of Municipal garbage from Sunderbani is being processed every day by segregation of Bio-degradable and non-biodegradable waste material followed by the process of vermi-composting; was observed by everybody in the area and in the span of 08 months, 800 kgs of vermi-compost has been prepared. This project aims to upgrade the Solid Waste Management System through recycling and composting of the garbage and to propagate the 3R’s System (recycling, reuse and reduction) of solid waste.”
Besides DDC Rajouri, the function was also attended by Dr Rajinder Khajuria, KAS; Sub Divisional Magistrate Nowshera, Davinder Paul Tehsildar, Sunderbani, Md. Rafiq, Tehsildar Nowshera, Tehsildar Kalakote, Executive officer Sunderbani Municipality and other officers from different Deptts; Sarpanches and panches of Rajouri Kalakot and Sundarbani.
