JAMMU: Divisional Commissioner Jammu, Mr. Pradeep Gupta today stressed the need to broaden the base of Red Cross Movement by enrolling volunteers from rural and far off areas. The Div Com, as the chief guest, was speaking at a function organized by Regional Red Cross Society, Jammu, to mark world Red Cross Day. President Chamber of Commerce and Trade, Y.P Sharma was guest of honour. The theme of World Cross Day for this year is “150th Years of Humanitarian Service”. Incidentally this year, Regional Red Cross Society Jammu, is also celebrating the Golden Jubilee Year of its existence. Mr Gupta lauded the humanitarian services being rendered by the Regional Red Cross Society, Jammu and stressed the need to enroll more and more Volunteers to ensure timely help at the time of need to the suffering humanity during natural and manmade disasters. He also stressed upon the NGOs and other volunteer organizations to be always ready to reach out to the people affected by natural calamities like earthquake, cloudburst, floods etc in far-flung and inaccessible areas. Referring to the earthquake that hit the state recently, he said the government has sanctioned Rs 25 crore for restoration of damaged public service infrastructure in the affected areas. He said that Chairman of Indian Red Cross Society and Union Minister for Health and family Welfare, Mr. Ghulam nabi Azad also visited the affected areas to assess the loss and also approved procurement of 10.000 tents to be provided to the families whose houses have been damaged in the natural calamity in Doda, Ramban and Kishtwar. He also apprised that the Chief Minster also sanctioned relief and 3 month free ration to the affected families. Earlier, the Divisional Commissioners and President Chamber of Commerce and Industry, in presence of executive committee members, Red Cross Society volunteers, students of educational institutions lit the ceremonial lamp to pay homage to the founder of Red Cross Movement. Secretary Regional Red Cross Society gave a brief detail of the activities of Regional Red Cross Society Jammu. Awards were also presented to the Red Cross Volunteers and representatives of various NGOs by the Divisional Commissioners.
