SRINAGAR, May 8:The Indian Red Cross Society, J&K State Branch organized a function to celebrate World Red Cross Day-2013 at its Branch Office here today. The Chief Post Master General, J&K Circle Mr. John Samuel was the chief guest on the occasion. The World Red Cross Day is celebrated every year to commemorate the birth anniversary of founder Sir Henry Dunant and to remember his contributions towards humanity and to pay homage to him. The Day is being observed every year on different themes and this year’s theme is “150 years of Humanitarian Action” (1863-2013). The Red Cross Society is an organization which is free from political, military, religious and regional influences. It offers medical assistance, relief during various situations like war, earth quake, disaster, natural calamity, epidemic, besides rehabilitation of the victims by extending cash and kind support. The ICRC, J&K State Branch launched one flag ship project namely Jan Aushadhi in 2011 for general public, especially to those whose cannot afford lifesaving drugs at high cost. Three Jan Aushadhi drug stores are already function in the state, one each at Srinagar, Leh and Anantnag, adding that such drug outlets would also be established at every district headquarters. Mr. N. D. Samnani, in his welcome address, highlighted the contributions of founder members, Sir Henry Dunanat for the cause of humanity. He also throws light on various aspects of life of Henry who sacrificed his business and personal interest human well-being. Mr. Samnani thanked Governor of the State for showing deep concern for the welfare of the people of the State and paid help for extending activities of the organization to far-off areas. He also thanked the Government for extending financial assistance from the contribution of government employees. He appealed the people for contributing generously for the noble cause. A symposium was also organised on the occasion in which students from various educational institutions participated and briefly dwelt on the working and importance of the organisation. Mr. Younis Ahmad Kaloo from SP College, who was adjudged the best speaker, was honoured by presenting certificate and citation. The other speakers were also honoured on the occasion by presenting certificates. The districts one each from Kashmir and Jammu Division which are Ramban and Srinagar, were honoured with special award for extending first-aid to the victims of accidents. On the occasion, the Department of Posts, India organised Philately exhibition. A special postal cover exclusively on Red Cross was also released on the occasion. The cost of the cover is Rs. 10 and the funds raised from the sale of this would be contributed to Red Cross. Later, the chief guest flagged-off rally of volunteers of the organization. Among others, Deputy Commissioner, Srinagar Mr. Farooq Shah, General Secretary, J&K State Red Cross Branch Mrs. Roma Wani, team leader ICRC, J&K Mr. John Francois, State Chief Commissioner Bharat Scouts and Guides Mr. Nazir Ahmad Khan, Secretary Regional Red Cross Committee, Kashmir Mr. Abdul Jabar, Executive Members, J&K Red Cross Branch Mr. A M Mir, Prof. Nusrat Andrabi and Qazi Mohammad Amin, Treasurer, J&K Red Cross Society Mr. N D Samnanai, Members of Managing Committee ICRC, Principals of various educational institutions, doctors, besides volunteers and students were present on the occasion. |
