| Dir Hort reviews progress on development activities | | | Early Times REport
jammu, May 24: Director Horticulture, Jammu, A.K. Sharma, reviewed the progress on various developmental activities in Kathua district in a meeting with all the Horticulture Development Officers held here today. Chief Horticulture Officer, S. Tarvinder Singh, District Horticulture Officer, Kathua, Ajit Kumar Sharma besides other senior officers of the department were present in the meeting. The Director, while interacting with the officers, asked them to train and educate the fruit growers about all the latest techniques of orchard management to increase production and quality of fruits to give a big fillip to the fruit industry in general and farming community in particular. He directed the field functionaries to ensure that the benefit of all centrally and State Sponsored programmes being implemented through the Department should reach the deserving growers. He stressed upon the field functionaries to focus on cultivation of the best suited varieties of high density Mango and guava and shape the orchard in high density form in the sub-tropical areas of the District. He further advised the field functionaries to gear up for the coming rainy season plantation. The lay out and pit digging work must be completed in first fortnight of June so that the plantation targets are achieved well in time. Special emphasis was laid by Director Horticulture on the field functionaries to have a very close liaison with the farming community by way of advocating them about all the protective measures to be followed for saving the young plantation and the standing fruit crop from scorching heat and dry spell being currently experienced in the area by adopting mulching techniques and judicious use of water. Chief Horticulture Officer, Kathua while briefing the chair about various developmental activities being undertaken in the district informed that an area of 278 hectares was covered under fruit plantation of different kinds during 2012-13 in Kathua District besides 14 vermi compost units, 8 farm mechanization units and 1959 sq.mtr. were brought under protected cultivation. |
