Afghanistan: Two children were killed in a mortar attack in eastern Afghan province of Wardak overnight, police said on Friday. "Two mortars fired by anti-government militants stroke a residence in Jaghato district Thursday night. Two children were killed, one woman and one man were seriously wounded," the provincial police said in a press statement. The apparent target of the attack was the nearby district administrative headquarters, it noted. The number of children killed or injured as a result of the on- going conflict is on the rise, with a 27 percent increase in the first four months this year compared with the same period in 2012, the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) said on Wednesday. "From 1 January to 30 April this year, 414 conflict-related child casualties were recorded, compared to 327 recorded during the same period last year. Such a sharp rise early in the year raises serious concerns," the UNICEF said in a press release. |
