Sham inspects several PHE, Irri schemes in Ang, Pulwama districts
Rs. 68.61 cr expended on Tangnar WSS till date: CE

ANANTNAG/PULWAMA : In the last leg of his 2-day tour to Anantnag and Pulwama districts, the Minister for PHE, Irrigation & flood Control, Mr. Sham Lal Sharma today inspected number of Irrigation & PHE schemes and received detailed appraisal of each project. The projects which were inspected by the Minister included Water Supply Scheme (WSS) Bumzoo Matan, Anantnag, Modernization of Martand canal at Ganeshpora, Dadi Canal head works, Filtration plant at Katsoo, Bijbehara, Lift Irrigation Scheme (LIS) Rajpura and WSS Pantha Chowk.
Chief Engineer, PHE, Mr. A.M. Lanker, Chief Engineer, Irrigation & Flood Control, Mir Javed Jaffer, Superintending Engineers, Hydraulic/Mechanical and executive engineers of concerned divisions accompanied the Minister.
Expressing satisfaction on the pace of progress of on-going projects, the Minister directed the concerned engineers to speed up the pace and accomplish the projects well within the stipulated time frame. He laid stress on maintaining the quality of works strictly as per the laid down standards, adding that there should be no compromise on the quality of works and directed the Chief Engineers to strengthen the monitoring mechanism to ensure time bound completion of projects. While inspecting the existing schemes, the Minister directed the concerned to ensure proper upkeep of all assets to maintain their efficiency. He issued specific instructions to the in-charge section officers to keep a close vigil on the sanitation of filtration plants and regular lab tests to ensure the quality water to the people. He asked the concerned executive engineers to draw up a contingent plan for undertaking maintenance/repair works of existing infrastructure to avoid major damage. He impressed upon the officers to work with extra zeal, dedication and ensure best possible services to the people. He urged the senior officers to enhance the field visits to clear bottlenecks, if any in their respective jurisdictions.
While briefing the Minister about the status of WSS Tangnar Pantha Chowk in the outskirt of Srinagar, the Chief Engineer, PHE informed that work on the scheme is in full swing and likely to be completed as per the target date i.e. 2014. He apprised that uptill now Rs. 68.61 crore have been spent on different component of the scheme. This prestigious project has been coming up at an estimated cost of Rs. 148.37 crore under JNNURM and on completion this will meet the drinking water needs of Greater Srinagar and parts of Budgam district and Pampore. The project involves 67 kms of pipe network, reservoir, filtration plant and pump house. The scheme will have the design capacity of over 10 MG per day, said the Chief Engineer.
Earlier, in the morning at Pahalgam, the Minister addressed the volunteers and students at an awareness camp organized by the Jawahar Institute of Mountaineering & Winter Sports (JIM & WS). In his brief address, the Minister highlighted the importance of the Institute and its activities. He said the institute has been rendering very useful services by imparting trainings to the students from different parts of the country on different subjects aimed at strengthening the unity and integrity of the nation, besides dealing with the natural calamities, maintaining communal harmonies and issues related to the development of the society. He wished them all success and asked for conducting such programmes at different parts of the State, especially in the rural and far-flung areas.
The students presented colorful bonanza of cultural items and skits highlighting the social evils. They enthralled the gathering with their acts. The Minister also distributed prizes to the students who excelled in different activities.
