| IRCS to launch 1st Medical Responder Programme in Erstwhile Doda District | | | DODA, July 7: Indian Red Cross Society (IRCS) is going to launch the ‘First Medical Responder Programme’ (FMRP) in the erstwhile district from July 13. First such programme in the state being launched in collaboration with State Red Cross Society, the programme aims at to train local youth as volunteers to ensure quick response in case of calamity or disaster to minimize the loss of human lives. The youth would be trained in providing first aid, launch rescue & search, disaster management, family news service, maintain water supply & sanitation, health and hygiene, besides man and manage camps- the activities which will help to save precious lives during any eventuality, said Mrs. Roma Wani, Honorary General Secretary, State Red Cross Society in a Media interaction today at Doda. She said that First Medical Responder (FMR) programme is an initiative of Indian Red Cross to save lives during calamities and disasters through training the local volunteers including the girls. She said that from 13th of July 2013, National Headquarter IRCS will convene a training course for volunteers from across the erstwhile Doda District including Kishtwar and Ramban Districts at Bhaderwah. She said Bhaderwah has been selected for launch of the FMR programme as it was the epicentre of the recent earthquake that shook the entire Chenab valley recently. She said the programme will spread the skills among volunteers called first medical responders and then in their own communities and beyond, which would help in saving precious lives during any eventuality or natural calamity such as earthquakes, floods, mishaps, etc. She also said that the training will be provided to the volunteers by the Master Trainers of Indian Red Cross Society National Headquarters and Master Trainers of State Red Cross. She further said that, First Medical Responder would comprise of groups of volunteers who, within the community in which they live or work, will be trained to deal with emergency, provide potentially life-saving treatment and first aid until an emergency ambulance or specialized medical teams arrive. She said that, sharp increase in the number of natural disasters countrywide, like earthquake in Bhaderwah and Kashmir, cloud burst in Ladakh, Heavy rains and Floods in Uttrakhand etc, has prompted the Red Cross to pay more attention on Disaster preparedness activities. These aim to make Red Cross Societies and communities more aware of the risks they face, how to reduce their vulnerability, and how to cope when disaster strikes for which first medical responder programme has been launched. Mrs. Wani said that, many people die as a result of no access to even the most basic health services and elementary health education. Health and community care has become a cornerstone of humanitarian assistance, and accounts for a large part of Red Cross activities. Through the First Medical Responder (FMR) programmes, the Red Cross aims to enable volunteers / communities/ groups/ villages/ Blocks etc to reduce their vulnerability to disease, and prepare for and respond to public health crises in an effective way to save precious lives. She also said that the entire programme will be being organized under the overall supervision of the concerned DDC. She also revealed that the Chairman, Indian Red Cross Society who happens to be the Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare, Mr. G.N Azad will inaugurate the programme in Bhaderwah along with Secretary General Indian Red Cross Society National Level, Mr. S.P Agarwal. |
