| Safai Karamcharis go on strike turning city a pile of garbage | | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, July 18 : Sanitation and regular cleaning went out of gear within Municipal limits, comprising 71 wards as around 2500 Safai Karamcharis (sweepers) of Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC) today went on indefinite strike in support of their long pending demands. The Strike of the safai karamcharis has left the city presenting an ugly outlook to not only to the Jammuites but also to the Amarnath pilgrims who are visiting the city during yatra period these days. A large number of scavengers/sweepers along with Class IV employees of Municipal Corporation held demonstration against government alleging that it has totally ignored their plight. Highlighting their long pending demands, the protestors apart from their regularization demanded hike in salary to those engaged through contractual system and constitution of Departmental Promotion Committee (DPC) for incharge Sanitary Supervisors working in the department for last many years. Early in the morning Municipal workers under the banner of Civic Safai Karamchari Union (CSKU) and Jammu Municipal Drivers' Union (JMDU) forced all corporation offices in the city to shut down and warned of further protests if their demands were not addressed. "Earlier there were 23 wards in Jammu with 1,056 workers, but today the number of wards has increased to 71. We have been demanding increase in staff strength and Departmental Promotion Committees (DPC) for all cadres, some of protestor said. Speakers from JMDU alleged that temporary daily labourers at present are being paid Rs 2,100 per month, while monthly wages set by the government is Rs 4,500. "We are not demanding land for free but there should be easy installments as most of the Karamcharies are living in rented accommodation", said Rinku Gill, senior union leader. "We have been asking for setting up of DPC for some time now, but have only got assurances. The issue of making contractual drivers permanent is also pending," another union members said. |
