| Jammu-Udhampur Rail link to remain suspended for two days | | | ET Report
Jammu, Aug 7: The Jammu-Udhampur Railway track remained closed for train traffic on the second consecutive day after a major landslide destroyed the track near Tunnel-16 (T-16) between Manwal-Ramnagar on Tusday. The railway officials inform that, the traffic will remain suspended on the track linking Northern Command of Indian Army, based in Udhampur with rail link with rest of the country till the restoration of track will be completed. Due to overnight heavy rainfall for 48-hours, a major landslide happened near Tunnel-16 (T-16) between Manwal-Ramnagar on Tuesday. However no loss of life was reported, but the track was damaged, which takes more than two days to get restored. Railway officials informed, "The work is in progress and the track will be hopefully restored by Friday." "All the trains for Udhampur from Jammu have been cancelled but rail traffic to the rest of the country is through," he added. There are seven train for Udhampur from Jammu, Malwa Express, Jammu Mail, Uttar Sampark Kranti, Summer Special and three DMU's. All these train have been affected due to the land slide. This was the second such incident within four days, On August 2, Hemkunt express had got derailed at Samba due to heavy rainfall, which has loosened the earth near the track. This line is an important link for Jammu-Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (JUSBRL) Project to connect Kashmir valley with rest of the country. Construction of line was biggest project undertaken by the Indian Railways in the mountainous terrain which runs to some of the lofty mountain ranges of Pir Panjal and Himalayas. |
