Fruit show-cum-exhibition held

Kishtwar, Sept 23: A two day 'Fruit show cum exhibition' under the HMNEH scheme was organized by Horticulture Department Kishtwar at the ITI Ground.
The show which was attended by large number of fruit growers, farmers and general public is one of the major initiatives taken by the Department for the overall improvement in the field of fruit production, marketing and awareness among the fruit growers in this far flung hilly district.
ADC Kishtwar Mohd Haneif Malik inaugurated the Fruit Show in the presence of various District and Sectorial Officers of Horticulture, Sericulture, Fisheries, SKUAST Jammu, Agriculture, SBI, Health and representatives of various NGOs and manufactures of farm and plant protection equipments.
Chief Horticulture Officer Kishtwar R.C Putto presented the welcome address and highlighted various departmental schemes and major achievements made by the department during 2012-13 in Kishtwar district which included 607 Hect covered under new plantation of 1.42 lac fruit plants covering 1377 beneficiaries.
He also informed the participants that 360 hect of old orchards have been rejuvenated, 50 units of vermi composting created and 222 manually operated sprayers distributed to the orchardists.
He said that 37 awareness camps were organized in the district and 235 farmers imparted training in advance orchard management.
The participants were also addressed by CAO, District Sheep Husbandry Officer, Dy. Director Sericulture and Scientists from RHRSS Bhaderwah (SKUAST) Jammu and progressive orchardists of the district. While the speakers exhorted upon the fruit growers to adopt new and innovative techniques in farming with full applications of scientific knowledge, the fruit growers put forth their day to day problems regarding production and marketing of the fruits.
The Chief Horticulture Officer Kishtwar assured them that the department is committed to the socio economic and technical upliftment of the fruit growers and all their genuine concerns will be addressed. On this occasion a total amount of Rs. 12400 was announced for the best 48 entries in the show which included Rs. 1000/- for fruit of the show contest.
