Jammu, Sept 27: Following deadly twin Fidayeen attacks on Hiranagar Police station and the Army camp at Samba,in which 10 people were killed, the central Government has deferred its plan on accepting Chief Minister Omar Abdullah's demand for the partial revocation n of the AFSPA in Jammu and Kashmir. Official sources today said that the Government of India, particularly the Ministry of Defence, is now opposed to tampering with the AFSPA in view of the deteriorating security scenario in Jammu and Kashmir. According to these sources, Omar Abdullah had been pleading in favour of partial revocation of the AFSPA and Samba is among the five districts from where he wants the Act to be lifted. However, the Government of India has been worried over the Thursday's twin attacks on the police and the Army camps. The sources said that the Thursday's incident has clearly indicated that Samba is vulnerable to terrorist strikes. The Government is equally worried over the continued support militants receive from the Pak Army in infiltrating into Jammu and Kashmir. Sources said the senior functionaries of the Army have been asked to discuss with the BSF, guarding the IB in Jammu sector, ways and means that needed to be adopted for preventing militants from crossing into the Jammu area. Reports said senior Army officers have been asked to guide BSF for upgradding the counter infiltration grid on the IB. And Omar Abdullah too is being suggested to forget about raking up his demand for revocation of the AFSPA. |
