| Jammu bandh: energetic mode of BJP on wane | | Participation thin, absence of few leaders conspicuous | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Sept 27: State unit of BJP may well pat itself for bandh having culminated on a 'successful' note in Jammu today, but the party cannot certainly be credited alone for it for more than one reason. In complete deviation to past practices and contrary to forceful and energetic mode party leaders and cadres used to show under such bandh calls over such incidents, it was a superficial show arranged by few and managed by even lesser number in terms of strength in pockets and areas wherever BJP staged protest demonstrations. The participation with thin and enthusiasm on wane . Is the party losing its vigor and are the leaders pushing to wall the purpose of political actions meant to broaden the political space in the region…? If the mode of participation and 'for the sake' of conduct of those who made it, perhaps unwillingly to sites of protest demonstration is any indicator, the answer is to some extent in affirmative. The bandh in some areas was seen as complete and in many areas partial with people choosing not to respond apparently in order to not let their means of livelihood get affected by closure of shops. However, whatever response in making it look complete was also a voluntary gesture of people who took the terror strike as an affront to the national interest and its security grid, vitiating the peace once again in the region. No doubt BJP initiated the move of giving call for bandh, it was supported immediately by Chamber of Commerce and even Bar Association, which is something normal and as a matter of routine seen in the past to express anguish over such dastardly acts. However, the cooperation of business fraternity as also of the transport operators was more on their own as observed during the day. In what could be seen as complete deviation from the past occasions when BJP workers and even senior functionaries would make their presence felt right from the early morning to late in the evening , there was little or no such motivational aspect in any quarter. Senior leaders including president and front line members indeed made themselves present at the main site of protest but it was seen as token gesture , no matter slogans were raised against Pakistan, UP government and effigies also burnt to express anger and anguish. But the complete absence of some senior most leaders for the whole 'show' certainly became conspicuous and questionable. Whether they dissociate from such programmes willingly and keep distance for a motive, is something leadership needs to explore. BJP also needs to introspect over the cause of waning enthusiasm of workers who tend to conduct themselves in more superficial role than a means of complete conviction.
